Andy Cohen Apologizes To Heidi Montag After 14-Year-Old 'Trash' Comment

Andy Cohen is known to be catty and selective about his Real Housewives picks, as well as guests for his interactive live show, Watch What Happens Live. But that has bitten him back a few times (Bravo lawsuits aside).

He once said he regrets turning down Meghan Markle on WWHL, but today he says she’d make an “interesting” housewife. Now, the same may be the case with Andy calling The Hills‘ Heidi Montag too “trash” for the famous franchise back in 2011.

The Hills alum kicked off a comeback in January 2025. Her longtime husband, Spencer Pratt made her 2010 album Superficial hit no.1—hoping to finance their recovery after losing their home to the Palisades fire.

Now, Andy is apologizing for his “mean” comments that crushed Heidi’s Real Housewives dream. But he may be a little too late…

In 2011, Heidi expressed her interest in joining Real Housewives on then-Twitter (now known as X). Andy didn’t like the idea and called her “trash.” He added: “I would sooner stab … knives into my own eyes than see her on this network.”

Heidi called the remarks “tasteless” and “hurtful and completely unnecessary.” A week later, Andy admitted he “got a little carried away,” explaining that “there had been so many rumors going on about the Housewives last week, I think I was at the tipping point, basically.”

Andy Cohen got “very upset” at Anderson Cooper during their 2025 New Year’s Eve Live.

Andy didn’t exactly say sorry back then. But 14 years later, he finally made an apology for being “mean” to Heidi during an episode of Sirius XM’s Andy Cohen Live. “What I will say also is that was mean,” he admitted on January 29, 2025.

“That was 14 years ago, and what I really don’t like about it is referring to her as trash… I don’t like that at all, and I’m really sorry about that, so I apologize again,” Andy added.

He went on to clarify that he wasn’t trying to make excuses for his poor response. “By the way, there were things that we said and did on TV 14 years ago that we wouldn’t do now,” Andy confessed. “It just was a different universe, but that’s not—I’m not trying to justify it.”

This isn’t the first time Andy’s old “trash” comments were dug up. In a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Heidi and Spencer sat down to reflect on their career, including the former’s dream to be on Real Housewives.

When asked if she thought Andy was the reason she wasn’t on the show, the “I’ll Do It” hitmaker answered: “I think so. He made a statement a while ago that he would never want me on it and that I wasn’t for their franchise.” Heidi then said that Andy was “wrong” about his assessment.

“I think that he’s so wrong,” Heidi argued. “I don’t know if he’s just a Lauren [Conrad] fan or what, because I would think that he would appreciate the reality star that I am. I completely make sense to be on one of these shows. Maybe before when I was younger that didn’t quite make sense. But I’m 37 now, and as a mama too, I could easily go on Orange County or Beverly Hills.”

Spencer, who’s always been an advocate of his wife, added that she’d “upstage” the housewives. Following that interview, Andy shared his side again—causing fans to think that the couple was only trying to use his reaction for attention. Well, it didn’t really work here.

Spencer Pratt Regrets Not Accusing Heidi Montag Of Cheating On Him On The Hills

Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag struggled to get a bigger TV break after The Hills.

The WWHL host started by saying he didn’t have “institutional knowledge” of Heidi and Spencer. Andy then said that “it would be weird if they were on the Housewives” just as he thinks “it would be weird if Snooki (from Jersey Shore) came on the Housewives.

Heidi and Spencer’s reality shows together:

  • The Hills (2006–2010)
  • I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! (2009)

A day before Andy officially apologized for his sassy evaluation of Heidi, Spencer reminded fans on X about the comments again (they’re really not beating the clout allegations). Then on January 26, 2025, Spencer said he wouldn’t go on WWHL because of Andy’s harsh words.

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have an estimated combined net worth of $2 million. They have two sons: Ryker and Gunner stone.

The person who said he would rather scratch his eyes out then [sic] watch my wife … hard pass ❤️,” Spencer said to the fan who inquired. When another fan suggested he should give Andy a second chance, as he and Heidi get one, the reality star said he’d “rather sit in my burned house rubble.”

Fans didn’t think Heidi and Spencer would make it as a real couple.

Spencer, who said he has to be on TikTok to survive, is clearly not trying to suck up to Andy. Let’s just hope Speidi’s rumored Hulu talk show pushes through this time.

For the record, the couple have faced bigger career challenges in the past, like losing their $10 million fortune over failed attempts to be A-listers.
