Three public hospitals in Tshwane ushered in the New Year with the arrival of 14 newborns on January 1.
The births were recorded between 00:00 and noon.
New Year’s Day births were recorded as follows:
– Kalafong Hospital: 6 babies
– Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital: 4 babies
– Steve Biko Academic Hospital: 4 babies
A total of 203 New Year births were recorded in the Gauteng province by the provincial health department.
While visiting Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto, MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, urged parents to prioritise the immunisation of their newborns to protect them from preventable diseases.
“As we celebrate the arrival of new life, it is imperative to highlight the vital role of immunisation and exclusive breastfeeding in safeguarding the health of infants,” she said.
“Mothers should consider exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months to ensure their newborns receive the necessary nutrients for healthy development.”
She also encouraged parents to register their newborns with the Department of Home Affairs through the offices located in public health facilities.
