The pass rate for 2024 matriculants from the 59 institutions affiliated with the South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute, has improved from 72% in 2023 to 73.9%.
This is according to Chris Klopper, chief executive officer of the institute.
The institute will release its 2024 NSC examination results for the 5 789 candidates who sat at 84 examination writing centres for the examination during October/ November 2024 on 15 January 2025.
Klopper told Rekord the institute provides a viable alternative for learners who may not be able to complete their school careers in mainstream educational environments.
It is a non-profit private assessment body that assesses the National Senior Certificate and General Education and Training Certificate: Adult Basic Education and Training qualifications to a diverse group of candidates.
He said on a close analysis of the results, 11 of the institutions registered with the institute achieved a 100% pass rate and 88% for distance learners.
A total of 1 846 (53%) learners achieved university exemption, and 2 068 earned distinctions, while 11 candidates achieved 6 distinctions each.
“The release of the results emanates from a comprehensive process of interaction with Umalusi, the quality assurer. The quality assurer ensured the quality is on par and that parents and candidates can be assured of the credibility and quality of the results,” said Klopper.
The profile of candidates who registered with the institute represents a range of individuals with diverse needs like independent schools, which are not the typical and traditional schools, but smaller specialised institutions that cater for specialised needs.
A total of 88% of the candidates completed their school career via distance education providers.
“Many of the learners opted for distance education for reasons beyond their control like serious illness, disabilities and learning difficulties. Some do not have access to public schools in close proximity and by necessity must consider other alternatives. There are also some learners who have specialised extra-mural responsibilities and to compel them to attend traditional schools will make no sense at all.”
He said it was evident there is a place and role for smaller specialised independent institutions and distance education providers that traditional schools are not able to fulfil.
“In terms of quality educational outcomes, they are comparable to mainstream educational institutions and in addition, are able to provide an alternative quality education service to parents and learners.”
– Candidates of the institute will be able to access their results by logging on to the SACAI website (www.sacai.org.za ) with effect from 08:00 on 15 January 2025 and download a provisional proof of results. The official statement of results will be available on 16 and 17 January at the respective examination centres at which the candidates sat for examinations. To assist those candidates who could not attain the pass requirements, the institute will offer a rewrite opportunity during the May/ June examinations.
