Tshwane residents should stay on high alert this week as the South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 5 warning for disruptive rain, which poses a significant risk of flooding.
As of this afternoon, Pretoria is bracing for a series of rainstorms that could lead to dangerous conditions across the region.
According to SAWS, the forecast indicates that temperatures today will range from a high of 25°C to a low of 17°C, with a 100% chance of rain.

The rain is expected to persist throughout the week, with a high of 25°C and an 80% chance of rain on Tuesday, followed by a high of 25°C and a 60% chance of rain on Wednesday.
The intensity is expected to decrease slightly on January 9 and January 10, with a consistent high of 25°C and a 30% chance of rain.
Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni emphasised the need for residents to remain vigilant during this period.
“The impact of disruptive rain may include widespread showers and thundershowers that will produce heavy rainfall, leading to several potential hazards,” Mnguni said.
Risks include:
– An elevated risk of localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, informal settlements and susceptible roads.
– Potential disruptions to traffic due to major roads being flooded.
– An increased likelihood of minor to major vehicle accidents due to poor visibility and slippery road conditions.
– Possible localised service disruptions due to power failures and damage to infrastructure.
– Some communities may become temporarily inaccessible or cut off.
– A danger to life from fast-flowing streams and rivers.
In light of these warnings, Mnguni urged residents to follow these crucial safety tips:
– If possible, stay indoors and avoid metal objects that could attract lightning.
– Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects during thunderstorms.
– Avoid crossing flooded, low-lying roads, bridges and swollen streams.
– Stay aware that thunderstorms may bring hail, strong winds, heavy rain and excessive lightning.
“The Tshwane Emergency Services Department will continue to monitor the weather reports and remain on high alert for any related emergencies,” assured Mnguni.
He also encouraged community members to report any emergencies by calling 107 toll-free or 012 358 6300/6400.
“When reporting an emergency, please remain calm, speak clearly, and provide your exact location and contact number for effective communication with our operators,” he added.
