Tshwane hospitals welcomed hundreds of newborns during the festive season, including a set of twins at Steve Biko Academic Hospital (SBAH) on Christmas Day.
Pretoria welcomed 58 newborn babies on Christmas Day at various health facilities.
Verushca Le Roux and Arthur Johannes (AJ) Bergh, both 17 years old and from Claremont, Pretoria welcomed their twin baby boys Adam and Lucas on December 25.
“It was overwhelming because they were born before their due date which was in the middle of January. They were born at 32 weeks. It was also stressful because I went into labour with the knowledge that normal birth is not an option as they are identical twins. An emergency C-section had to be done for the safety of myself and my children,” Le Roux said.
Le Roux said that the delivery was a painful process as she had been experiencing contractions before the emergency C-section, though the staff at SBAH were incredibly helpful and patient.
“It’s a blessing to have two babies on Christmas and my hopes are that they will grow strong and healthy. I thank our Lord for protecting them and giving us healthy babies,” Bergh said.
Verushca’s mother Jodeen said that she was grateful for the Christmas Day gift and as the twins are still in hospital currently, she couldn’t wait until they were home.
“I can’t wait for them to come home. My wish for them is to grow up healthy, happy and loved to bits. They already stole my heart,” Jodeen said excitedly.
Grandparents and AJ’s parents Felicity Hunt and Dirk Wallis say that they are grateful for their grand babies and can’t wait to spoil them.
“My wish just for them for now is to stay strong and grow up to be busybodies,” Hunt remarked.
The young parents intend to raise their boys in Pretoria and are looking forward to what 2025 has to offer them.
“We want to finish school and seek work opportunities to be able to provide for our babies’ needs, to be good parents, teach them right from wrong and to love them more than anything in this world and protect them,” the couple said.
The couple also had some choice words for all the other parents who delivered this festive season.
“Remember to give your children two gifts, for Christmas and birthdays. Remember they are a big blessing from God. Love and protect them always. Congrats to all.”
The metro’s recorded Christmas Day births for 2024 were as follows:
– Steve Biko Academic Hospital: 9 (5 boys, 4 girls)
– Dr George Mukhari Hospital: 8 (11 boys, 5 girls)
– Kalafong Hospital: 14 (6 boys, 8 girls)
– Tshwane District Hospital: 2 girls
– Mamelodi Hospital: 14 (11 boys, 3 girls)
– Pretoria West Hospital: 8 (3 boys, 5 girls)
– Soshanguve Community Health Centre (3 boys)
On New Year’s Day, the province recorded 120 births, 63 boys and 57 girls.
Parents are urged to ensure that their newborns are registered with the Department of Home Affairs immediately after birth through their offices across all provincial public hospitals.
