Former British driver and 2009 world champion Jenson Button has shared his thoughts on Sergio Perez‘s form in Formula 1. The Mexican driver has been underperforming for the Milton Keynes-based team throughout the 2024 season.
Sergio Perez‘ form has raised questions both in the minds of his team as well as the spectators. He has not secured a podium since the Chinese GP this year and has not won a race since Azerbaijan last season. Despite having a contract until 2026, the 34-year-old’s future holds no surety.
Jenson Button has thereafter urged Perez to try and outpace his teammate Max Verstappen from this point on. Verstappen, who recently secured his fourth world title, has amassed 251 points more than Perez in 2024.
But if he comes out and has two magnificent races and beats Max Verstappen, he’s got a really good chance of keeping his drive. Because everyone just thinks of that last race in this sport. But if it continues like it has continued, I can’t see him being here next year.

Red Bull has suffered greatly in the constructors’ championship due to Perez’ inconsistent form. While Max Verstappen has charted several victories, the Mexican driver has struggled to even make it to the top five.

Red Bull’s RB20 has been ridden with several issues, unlike the previous season’s RB19. The challenger has struggled particularly the most around street circuits, as was seen in Azerbaijan and Las Vegas. Sergio Perez has thereafter shared his thoughts on the same ahead of the Qatar GP.
I think especially the last few months, we’ve had similar issues with the car, so we’re pushing in similar directions to try and improve the car. And at the end of the day, we are working as a team, like I say. The team knows exactly what we’ve done and where we are, and I think we’re working well together.

Perez claims that the RB20 has been causing similar issues to both him and Verstappen for the past few months. The 34-year-old nevertheless feels that the Milton-Keynes-based team is working in harmony to resolve the issues.
Ironically, the Dutchman has been on the podium 13 times as compared to the Mexican’s four despite facing the same shortfalls. This in all honesty raises a question solely on the declining competency of Perez in Formula 1.
