Chief of Tshwane Metro Police, Commissioner Yolanda Faro, has urged locals to cooperate with operations aimed at ensuring a safe and joyful festive season.
As the festive season is the busiest time of the year, filled with celebrations and long-distance travel, Faro emphasised the importance of prioritising safety and responsibility.
“Before embarking on any journey, ensure your vehicle and you are fit for the road,” she advised.
Faro also warned pedestrians to stay off freeways and avoid drinking and walking.
She said by taking these simple precautions, locals can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure a safe arrival at your destination.
“Throughout the festive season, the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) will conduct road safety operations to check the fitness of drivers and vehicles.”
Faro urged all drivers to cooperate with these operations and ensure they have all necessary documents in order.
She said it is also crucial to remain sober while driving, as the TMPD will not tolerate any form of lawlessness that endangers lives on the road.
Faro added that the TMPD has also added two mobile alcohol testing centre buses to enhance their ability to detect and apprehend drivers under the influence.
“These measures are aimed at keeping our roads safe and preventing accidents caused by drunk driving,” Faro said.
“In addition to road safety operations, the TMPD has been involved in various other initiatives to maintain law and order in the city.”
Faro encouraged parents to be involved in their children’s activities, educate them about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and protect them from harm.
She also commended officers for their selfless service and urged them to stay alert and vigilant.
“As we celebrate this festive season, let us be responsible. I wish you all a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year,” Faro said.
