Cody Rhodes set for 1st WWE title defense in three months against 40-year-old star at Saturday Night’s Main Event

For the first time since 2008, WWE is gearing up for the return of a classic—Saturday Night’s Main Event. Earlier today, the company announced on X that Cody Rhodes will defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens on the NBC special. Slated to emanate from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island, the SNME will make up for WWE’s PLE-less December.

Owens vs. Cody was months in the making. They seemed likely to run it back after the post-show fallout at Bad Blood. Little did the fans know that Kevin would embrace the cruelty that he’s been exuding of late. However, in his eyes, his actions are justified. The Prizefighter went ballistic at Rhodes for his link-up with Roman Reigns, be it a one-off deal only.

The French-Canadian went berserk on Cody for his help of Reigns. KO argued why there was a need for the ex-AEW EVP to bail Roman out of trouble. Not only that, the former NXT Champion redirected all the blame on Rhodes for being responsible for Randy Orton‘s current state.

The Viper was hospitalized after eating a Piledriver off Owens. In a passionate war of words last Friday on SmackDown, Kevin affirmed that he actually loved The Apex Predator. However, he prioritized Cody without even trying to know Owens’ side of the story. That hurt the latter.

As Kevin prepares for a crack at the WWE title next month, one would hope he’d not hold back an inch like he did at Bash in Berlin in August. KO’s inability to pull off the trigger on Rhodes cost him the match. They even shook hands.

What else is WWE planning for Saturday Night’s Main Event?

There’s talk of using WWE HOF’er Jesse Ventura in some capacity for the event. He has served as the color commentator during previous Saturday Night’s Main Event editions. Also, WWE is aiming to pull off a retro feel for the show, which would be a pinch of nostalgia for the old viewers.

Going by the seating configuration of the arena, SNME 2024 is likely to have a smaller set, as the company often does for its bigger shows. The women of WWE will make history that night. A first-ever Women’s United States Champion will be crowned at the namesake event.

While it could be anyone’s title, the fans are clamoring for Chelsea Green to win it. She has long held the reputation of an on-screen Karen. However, the Canuck has blown away the WWE Universe with her nuances. More matches will be added to the event in the aftermath of Survivor Series.
