Tyreek Hill‘s arrest before the Dolphins season opener against the Jaguars sent shockwaves amongst fans. It brought into the limelight the biased treatment of Black people by police officers. The amount of force used to arrest Hill over a speeding violation was criticized by his peers and the media. Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles spoke out against Hill’s arrest and had his back.
The winner of the 100-meter race in the Paris Olympics put out a post on X wherein he dubbed the entire situation as “Disgusting.” Noah Lyles chose to focus on a statement that Tyreek Hill made in his post-game press conference. The wide receiver expressed concern over what would have happened to him if he was not ‘Tyreek Hill,’ the famous athlete.
Noah Lyles agreed with that statement and expressed some concerns of his own.

His post and the sentiment expressed by Hill make one think. If individuals in their position cannot escape unnecessary force and biased treatment on the part of the police, how can Black folks who are commoners feel safe?

What makes the wide receiver’s arrest more concerning is the fact that it was right outside Hard Rock Stadium, a place where Hill was supposed to be. The Miami-Dade County Police Department released the bodycam footage of the officers involved. It makes one question whether the use of force in this situation was necessary.
Despite being handcuffed, Hill was shoved onto the pavement and forced to be on his knees. When his teammates Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith attempted to de-escalate the situation calmly, the police handcuffed them as well. This situation has resulted in athletes of all sports coming together and putting aside any differences they may have had in the past.
Noah Lyles and Tyreek Hill have been going back and forth in recent memory after the wide receiver claimed that he could run faster than the Olympian. But this situation is bigger than sports, it is bigger than the rivalries, and comes down to the single biggest issue that has plagued America for centuries. Race.
The Miami-Dade Police Department has placed the officers on administrative leave and has initiated an internal investigation of its own. The Miami Dolphins issued a statement of their own and dubbed the situation as ‘maddening.’ The team urged the Miami-Dade PD to take swift and strong action against the officers concerned.
