This prompted Berlanga to threaten De La Hoya. The Puerto Rican stated that he would physically confront the 51-year-old former boxer turned promoter. De La Hoya, unfazed, suggested Berlanga was getting distracted and should focus on his fight, implying Canelo Alvarez would easily beat him in the ring.
This was rather unexpected as De La Hoya primarily clashed with Canelo for a long time. Many issues came up after their professional split in 2020. Canelo, who spent much of his early career under De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, parted ways after accusing De La Hoya of mismanagement and dishonesty, including claims that De La Hoya attempted to steal money from him.
