Motorists will have to plan their trip wisely as a full road closure of the R21 highway between Nellmapius Drive interchange and Olifantsfontein is scheduled for the weekend.

In a statement on April 16, Eskom announced that the road would be closed for electrical repairs.

Project manager Arnold Wilson said the closure will affect traffic on both sides of the carriageway.

“The full road closure is required to allow Eskom to perform essential work necessary to install new overhead transmission power lines and a conductor, which supplies electricity to the area,” he said.

Wilson said the road will be closed in Olifantsfontein from Saturday, April 20 at 06:00 until 18:00 then again from 06:00 to 12:00 on Sunday, April 21.

He advised road users to obtain real-time traffic information and route status updates during that period.

He urged motorists traveling along the R21 freeway to use alternative routes, plan and adjust their route trips on time, drive cautiously, and adhere to signposted speed limits.

“Gauteng traffic officers and both the Tshwane and Ekurhuleni metro police will be deployed to manage and monitor the traffic diversion and ensure minimal disruption. Motorists will be diverted via the M57 for detour route.

Eskom apologises to the motoring public for any inconvenience caused and thanks them for their patience.”
