National Coordinator All Workers Convergence (AWC), Comrade Andrew Emelieze, Monday, declared that the members are in full support of the call by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for a national strike and protest.
Comrade Emelieze in a statement said the workers had resolved to participate massively in the protest nationwide.
According to a former Oyo state chairman Trade Union Congress (TUC), all people of goodwill in the country should solidarise with the labour to pressurise the federal government to rescind its decision on the fuel subsidy.
“We are in full support of the call by the NLC for a national strike and protest. We the Nigerian workers have resolved to participate massively in the protest nationwide. We call on all people of goodwill to solidarise with labour to pressurise the government of Nigeria.
“Besides the purported subsidy removal, which has led to increase in the pump price of petrol thus escalating the cost of living crisis facing Nigerians, there is this debate that the subsidy regime is a fraud and most likely that there is nothing like subsidy payment.
“It is also generally believed that President Tinubu is trying to meet up with the conditionalities of the IMF and the World Bank and or perhaps wants the Dangote Refinery to take off selling petrol at an exploitative price,” he said.
He lamented that Nigerians had expected that the new government of President Bola Tinubu should first investigate the subsidy regime, then dialogue with stakeholders before decisions are reached.
Comrade Emelieze stressed, “But unfortunately; Tinubu was so much in a hurry to unilaterally remove the subsidy in the most insensitive approach to the existential conditions of Nigerians. For a people that were just coming out of trauma and eight years of nightmare under Buhari, the swift removal of subsidy is unacceptable and equally suspicious.”
