For the first time in the program’s history, the LSU women’s basketball team is playing for a national championship.
The Tigers survived in a Final Four contest against a No. 1 Virginia Tech Hokies, winning 79-72 to advance to the championship game for the first time in coach Kim Mulkey’s second season.
LSU led them one-to-three after the first quarter, but saw their lead slip away as they fell by two points at halftime. The Hokies came out of goal very well in the second half and at one point in the third quarter they extended a 12-point lead.
However, the fourth consisted only of tigers. LSU beat VT 29-13, including a 15-0 run at one point, and another strong finish propelled this team to their fifth straight win.
Alexis Morris and Angel Reese had big games offensively, totaling 27 and 24 points respectively, while the latter also recorded another 12-board double-double. Meanwhile, LaDazhia Williams scored 16 points.
With the win, LSU will take on the winner of South Carolina and Iowa on Sunday. The former would represent a rematch of LSU’s only loss during the regular season, which came at Columbia by 24 points.
