LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. (KPEL News) — Littering in Lafayette is a crime that can earn you community service and fines. Operation Neaux Throw, which officially launched last year, has increased the fines and community service that offenders have to deal with as trash devalues our homes.
With the ordinance passed last year, a first misdemeanor for littering means you get 30 hours of community service and pay a fine of up to $200. There’s even a mandatory court appearance and $100 in court fees.

Our government and local volunteer organizations take pride in making tackling litter a priority to keep our city looking its best.
Several organizations will come together on Saturday, April 22nd to help with the Lafayette cleanup. Volunteers will pick up trash in our parks, off our streets, and around Bayou Vermilion.
Although our city is beautiful, some areas need some attention and if you would like to get involved in the clean up you can do so as an individual, with your club, with your company or with a non-profit group.
Whether you have a spot in town to clean up in mind or need one in mind, everyone needs to register by phone for this event. All you have to do is email [email protected] or call 337-291-5637.
You can choose to clean up an area on land or an area of the Vermilion River. If you’re cleaning up the river, you’ll need to bring your watercraft. Some people bring boats and others bring kayaks.
If you volunteer, you can either pick up your supplies on the day of the event or leave beforehand. Please call 337-291-5637 to make an appointment to collect what you need for the day. Deliveries will be as follows:
- Gloves
- trash bags
- gripper
- safety vests
These can be picked up at the Bayou Vermilion District’s Begnaud House at 500 Fisher Road.
The Trash Bash starts at 8:00 am and ends at 12:00 pm. At this time, refreshments and food will be served.
