With 20 mph winds whipping straight down the soccer field and the temperature hovering in the mid-40s, the Lady Patriots’ 4-2 win over DuQuoin on Saturday, April 1, was no walk in the park.
After beating the Lady Redskins 8-2 on Thursday, March 23, in Metropolis under more benign conditions and with a full roster contingent, the return trip to Perry County, with some dreadful weather setting in and being absent three starters, might have gone awry. But it didn’t.
The 8-2 win was never in doubt, and the return match was pretty much in hand from the start also. Claire Seitz scored a hat trick and Victoria Swafford punched in another for a 4-2 win.
Massac’s defense did a nice job keeping DuQuoin on the far end of the pitch, and with both teams showing the effects of the howling wind, the Lady Patriots secured their fourth win of the season.
Tuesday night, April 4, saw the Lady Patriots in Carterville to take on a solid Lady Lions team.
Carterville was fresh off of shutout wins over Anna-Jonesboro and Sikeston and a tough 2-0 loss to a talented Murphysboro team.
Despite a great defensive effort by the Lady Patriots, the offense was unable to get one past the Lady Lions’ keeper, and Carterville won by the narrowest of margins at 1-0. The loss dropped the Lady Patriots’ record to 4-3-1.
The Lady Patriots take on Murphysboro today, Thursday, April 6, at home and then go to Anna-Jonesboro next Tuesday, April 11.
