MLB’s new rules have divided baseball fans to start the 2023 season, though there is a prominent name that is all for the changes: Buster Posey.
On a recent appearance with “Foul Territory,” the Giants’ legendary catcher explained why he likes the new rules MLB implemented this season.
“I’ve always been in the camp of tweaking and trying new things,” Posey said. “… I mean, it’s all about fan engagement right? And I think that’s what’s been so great about these rules so far is I don’t think I’ve heard anybody say that they dislike watching a baseball game more now.”
The 36-year-old gave the example of golf courses around the United States and while there are const ant changes being made for the fans, the spirit of the courses never deviates.
“So, I’m so far in the camp of ‘Let’s be really bold in trying new things’ and guess what? If it doesn’t work, OK then kick it to the side,” Posey continued. “And you might take some heat for it for a little while but I always think you got to be forward thinking and try to improve the product and I’ve really enjoyed watching the games the last, whatever, it’s been a week or so now.”
As it stands, MLB’s new rules have been hit or miss — no pun intended — with both fans and players alike.
There are moments that could help the Giants, such as when Chicago White Sox star Tim Anderson was tossed out of the game against San Francisco on Thursday after arguing a strike-three call where he felt he got quick-pitched by Logan Webb.
Or it could be detrimental as evidenced by the new shift rules that hindered the Giants’ left-handed hitters against the Kansas City Royals on Friday.
Meanwhile, games are ending much quicker compared to last season, with a reported 30 minutes being shaved off each contest to start the season, from 3 hours to around 2 hours, 30 minutes.

Whatever the case might be, these new rules certainly will continue to be a talking point for the rest of the season.
However, for Posey, he’s just enjoying the product that he’s seeing out on the field, especially as the Giants continue their quest for another World Series title.
