Karen Pirie’s new ITV detective series The Distant Echo is based on one of Val McDermid’s best-known books, but she adds a few twists.
The show is set between 1990 and 2022 while the book is set between 1970 and 2000. Karen Pirie is the main character in this book and the rest of McDermid’s series. She didn’t show up until the very end of the last book.

We’re talking about Strangers on a Train because this week’s Oran Mor’s new play, Don’t Press This Button, is based on that idea.
In Alan Bissett’s play, McElhinney plays Maria, a train passenger who meets Ben (David Rankine) and, later, Terry.
The premise of the story immediately makes you think about how a woman should act when a man appears in such an intimate setting.
And are women very wary now that predatory men have been in the news so much? Or is there something in people that makes them less likely to talk to someone of the opposite sex on a train?
“Yeah, that comes from doing it,” says the actor. “The experience of getting angry about things that bother you. When the scene happens in the play, the women in the audience will all moan at the same time. We were all there.”
McElhinney doesn’t want to say too much about the play because he doesn’t want to “show Alan Bissett’s layers” (which is unfortunate when you have 800 words to discard and curious readers to satisfy).
However, she says that Maria is an anthropologist. She spends her whole life studying people. Although suspicious of Ben when he sits down, she begins talking to him after the lawyer cleverly attracts her.
But Maria is also someone to keep an eye on. “You never know if she’s genuinely interested in the conversation or if she’s just trying something out. You never know if she’s paying attention or not.”
When the third character, the straight and stocky Terry, appears, he makes it easier for the first two to talk to each other. But then he realizes that he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Terry doesn’t have a degree in subtext, which is a shame.
“Sorry, I can’t say more,” she says with a tight-lipped smile. OK, but tell me more. Do Maria and Ben seem to like each other? Yes, there seems to be a connection. Even when two people fight, it could be because they like each other.
“On the other hand, sometimes people who like someone can’t even look at them. But strangers get to know each other somehow.”
Well, do they? The actress won’t share everything, but she does talk about when she decided to become an actress.
“I played the innkeeper in a school play, but I was sad that I couldn’t wear robes and a headpiece like Mary Magdalene.”
She laughs at how quiet her distress was. “It was a way to get attention. When you’re the youngest in the family, that happens. But I think I knew right away that I wanted to do something.”
Acting, on the other hand, can be a fickle friend. McElhinney was allowed to show what she can do in the films Wild Rose and Outlaw King.
Since entering a graduate program at Dundee Rep, she has excelled in plays like Mother Courage and Oran Mor’s Divided, where she plays broken characters in a deliciously consistent way.
Still, she says business is tough on the soul. “I can understand why it would be difficult to stay motivated after not working for six months,” she says in an understanding tone.
McElhinney eventually left and he went to London. “I worked as a physio assistant in a London hospital. I liked learning how the body works. But (an offer to work in the Vanishing Point production) Interiors brought me back.
“The best way to get a role is to go on vacation or to your friends’ wedding,” says the actor with a smile.
