It is the first NCAA tournament matchup for two power programs with vastly different postseason résumés.
Duke has made 45 appearances in the Big Dance, winning all five and making the Final Four 17 times. Tennessee is 1-7 in the Sweet 16 and has never made the Final Four.
The winner advances to the regional semifinals in New York.
Atlantic Coast Conference tournament champion Duke has 10 straight wins and dominated Oral Roberts in Thursday’s opening round. Much of the team’s success has come since Scheyer transferred Tyrese Proctor to point guard and freed Jeremy Roach so he could play more in space.
It could also be a coming-of-age story for a team made up of four newcomers: Proctor, Dereck Lively II, Mark Mitchell and Kyle Filipowski. Duke’s turnaround began with a humiliating loss in Miami in early February.
Tennessee lost six of its last ten games before holding off Louisiana-Lafayette in the opening round. Offensively, the Volunteers didn’t do much right, but they strengthened their defense on the track.
