A suspected drug dealer has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of Nathan Millard, a Georgia father of five who turned up dead in Louisiana last month.
Millard was in Baton Rouge on a business trip when he appeared to disappear on February 23 after a night out with a customer at Happy’s Irish Pub. His body was found two weeks later in a vacant lot, rolled up in a rug and wrapped in plastic.
In a recent statement, the Baton Rouge Police Department said it has charged Derrick Perkins in connection with the case. He was previously arrested on March 13 for alleged parole violations and later faced charges including unlawful disposal of remains, obstruction of justice, simple criminal damage to property and failure to seek help.
Perkins was previously jailed at East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on criminal vandalism, triple fraud with access devices and unauthorized use of a vehicle, police said.
According to an affidavit from 11 Alive, Millard was looking for drugs the night of his death. He reportedly walked about a mile from the bar to the Baton Rouge bus station.
“After several attempts and requests by the bus station attendant to offer Nathan Millard assistance and/or a ride back to his hotel, he told the bus station attendant that he was ‘looking for something to make him feel better,’” according to the affidavit statement reads.
Millard eventually connected with Perkins, who authorities described as “a well-known drug dealer in the area.” He is accused of wrapping up Millard’s body after a suspected overdose and then putting it in the back of his car.
The remains remained in his vehicle for up to four days before Perkins disposed of them along a highway, police said. He has not been charged in connection with Millard’s death.
According to an autopsy, there was “no evidence of internal or external trauma.” A final autopsy report is pending, toxicology results.
