JEFFERSON PARISH, La. – A pet nutria is still on the run. The creature known as “Neuty” is created by the Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries after becoming a viral sensation.
Neuty’s story even reaches high-ranking state officials like Lt. gov. Billy Nungesser.
“I don’t want to encourage anyone to break the law, but if this pet is not harming anyone the way it is, I can’t see myself taking it away from the family. Hopefully they will reconsider taking this pet that only this family knows and would be lost without him,” Nungesser said.
Last fall, Nungesser pardoned a nutria at the Rougarou Festival in Houma.
“If I had the authority, I would certainly forgive this nutria to spend her life with this family who loves her unconditionally,” Nungesser said. “Perhaps the governor could do that.”
The Lacoste family said they will fight the removal of their pet.

The Lacoste family said they abide by Jefferson Parish laws.
According to Wildlife and Fisheries, the family broke state laws.
“In Louisiana, it is against the law to possess injured or orphaned mammals without an LDWF rehabilitation permit, even if there are plans to release them. It is illegal to own wild animals as pets or for the pet trade and no permit will be issued for this activity,” said Wildlife and Fisheries.
