Khalen Saunders can move. The New Orleans Saints’ recent free-agent acquisition has gone viral for his agility practice after he shared videos of him doing a backflip around the practice field while practicing for the 2019 NFL draft. It’s really impressive to see someone who weighs 324 pounds move as lightly as he does (and do a front flip to mix it up).
But it has drawn some unfortunate comparisons to one of the Saints’ past flops from yesteryear. Walter Thomas was a fan favorite back in 2007 after being signed as an undrafted free agent by Oklahoma State and Northwest Mississippi Community College — and the big defensive tackle could tip forward too. But he was fired after just a single practice session at the New Orleans rookie mini-camp.
Credit to Saunders for laughs at the comparison on Twitter. He says this is the first time he’s heard from Thomas and asks fans “with all due respect” to “stop mentioning brother in the same sentence as me”.
For what it’s worth, Thomas has enjoyed a successful career in the Indoor Football League, most recently signing up for the Carolina Cobras in 2022. Good for him that he found a way to continue playing professionally and to pursue his dreams. But as Saunders pointed out, the comparison doesn’t go very far. He’s gearing up to be a big player for New Orleans this year.
