Two high school bass anglers recently made national headlines when they hauled in a whopping five-fish limit weighing 37.13 pounds at a Louisiana Bass Nation event at Caney Lake, Louisiana.
Mason McCormick and Alexis Virgillito have teamed up to lead Bossier Parish High School’s bass team to a convincing win in the March 19 derby. The boys-girls team may have set a new national single-day record for high school bass tournaments, officials say.
The monster border was anchored by a 9.22-pounder.

Virgillito, now a rookie, is no stranger to the winners’ circle. In March 2022, she and another angler, Taylor Bacot, won the North Louisiana High School state fishing tournament at Caddo Lake, a 26,800-acre reservoir located partially in Texas. They became the first all-girls team nationwide to win a Bass Federation event.
In Texas high school action, Kaden Mueck and Lane Ward weighed in a whopper five-bass limit 33.40 pounds to win the Southeast Texas Fishing Association team event, held March 18 on Sam Rayburn.

They also had the event’s big bass, a 9.34-pounder. John French of Kountze fished solo and beat 469 other teams to win the Southeast Texas Fishing Association team event on March 19 by 19.35 pounds.
LBJ Bass Champions
Bass Champs held a double header for Central Region teams March 18-19 at Lake Lyndon B. Johnson, and some teams found the big ones biting.
Kenneth Witek of San Antonio/Russell Kessler of La Vernia outperformed 144 teams in the March 18 event with 23.90 pounds and a 12.92 pound bass. They won $21,000.
Granite Shoals’ Jesse Fry/Cypress Mill’s Kenneth Fry defeated 113 teams in the March 19 derby by 20.72 pounds. They earned $20,200.
