Nigeria’s Super Falcons kicked off their campaign at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in dominant fashion, overpowering Tunisia 3-0 in their opening Group B fixture at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.
The nine-time African champions signalled their intent for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title with a commanding performance that saw them overwhelm the North Africans with flair, pace, and precision.
The Falcons struck early in the 3rd minute, as Asisat Oshoala headed home from a well-taken Rinsola Babajide free kick, giving Nigeria an immediate advantage and putting the Tunisians on the back foot.
Coach Justine Madugu’s side maintained relentless pressure throughout the first half, and just before the halftime whistle, Babajide—who had assisted the opener—turned scorer. She coolly slotted past the Tunisian goalkeeper in the 45th minute, doubling Nigeria’s lead.
In a poignant moment, Babajide celebrated with Diogo Jota’s trademark gesture, paying tribute to the late Liverpool star, who died tragically alongside his brother Andre Silva last Thursday.
“It was for Jota. His passion inspired so many of us,” she said after the match.
Despite missed chances in the second half, including a long-range effort by Ashleigh Plumptre that was expertly tipped over the bar, the Falcons kept the pressure high.
Their persistence paid off in the 80th minute, as Chinwendu Ihezuo calmly slotted home a left-footed finish into the bottom corner to seal the victory.
The Super Falcons are on a redemption mission after their heartbreaking semi-final loss to host Morocco in 2022. With this convincing victory, they’ve made their intentions clear: WAFCON title number 10 is the goal.
Nigeria will now look ahead to their next group matches, hoping to maintain momentum and secure a smooth passage to the knockout stages.
