Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday dismissed reports suggesting it had officially joined a political coalition, insisting that no such decision has been made.
In a statement released by the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) described the circulating reports as “misrepresenting” and “unfounded”, saying they originated from a section of social media.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP has not taken any official position on the issue of coalition,” the statement read, emphasising the party’s current focus on internal unity and preparations for its upcoming National Convention.
The PDP said it is prioritising the consolidation of its internal stability and organisational strength as it gears up for the 2027 general elections, where it aims to reclaim power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Our Party is currently working conscientiously towards a successful National Convention which will further revamp and reposition the PDP for the task ahead,” Ologunagba said.
While denying any formal coalition alignment, the PDP maintained it remained open to collaboration with “like-minded citizens” committed to what it described as rescuing Nigeria from the “rudderless and insensitive” APC-led government.
The PDP, which governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is seeking a political resurgence after consecutive electoral defeats. The party expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their continued loyalty and pledged to restore its “winning ways” in the lead-up to 2027.
