Borno State has initiated a major dredging project of Lake Chad’s waterways, with Governor Babagana Zulum officially launching the operation at Baga Fish Dam in Baga town on Wednesday. This strategic move aims to restore the region’s economic vitality.

The dredging initiative represents a joint venture between the Borno State government and the Nigerian Navy, with additional support from the Lake Chad governor’s and other regional stakeholders.

This rehabilitation project seeks to reclaim the area’s former economic prominence following years of security challenges and environmental degradation.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor Umar Kadafur hailed the project as a transformative step in rebuilding the region’s economy and security after more than ten years of insurgent activities.

He emphasized Lake Chad’s traditional role as a vital resource supporting millions through its fishing, farming, commercial and transport opportunities.

The deputy governor explained how natural obstacles like sediment accumulation and receding waters have dramatically reduced economic prospects while increasing poverty levels in the area.

Governor Zulum extended special gratitude to the Nigerian Navy for their visionary involvement, noting their dual contribution to both regional stability and economic rehabilitation.

“This project will deliver numerous advantages including better water transport, revived fishing industry, boosted farming output, strengthened security, and renewed income opportunities,” Zulum stated.

The Commandant MUltisectoral joint Task Force, Major General Godwin Mutkut, praised the collaborative efforts of Borno State and Lac Province leaders in both combating insurgency and driving regional recovery projects.
