The Sokoto State Government has introduced Shagon Sauki (Palliative Shop), an initiative aimed at easing economic hardship for residents following the fuel subsidy removal.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu, while launching the program, stated that the scheme offers discounted essential food items including rice, millet, wheat, cooking oil, and spaghetti to civil servants, local government employees, and pensioners.
He emphasized that these products were selected due to their high demand in households across the state.
The governor announced that the initiative will first operate in six local government areas: Sokoto North, Sokoto South, Dange-Shuni, Wamakko, Kware, and Bodinga, with a 20% subsidy on goods.
“This is just first phase, we intend to extend it to all 23 LGAs in Sokoto,” he added.
Governor Aliyu also praised President Bola Tinubu for implementing policies that directly benefit ordinary Nigerians.
Meanwhile, Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi, who attended the launch, commended Aliyu for his people inclusive governance in just two years.
Namadi, whose state has already implemented a similar program, described the Sokoto governor as a “high performer” and congratulated Sokoto residents for electing him.
Earlier, Abdullahi Chiso, Chairman of the Subsidized Food Sales Committee and former Deputy Governor, clarified that all transactions at Shagon Sauki will be cashless, requiring electronic payments only.
