Dele Momodu, veteran journalist, two-time presidential aspirant, and prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has declared that President Bola Tinubu can only be unseated in 2027 through a strong coalition of opposition parties.
Speaking on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State’s monthly programme “Guest of the Month” on Tuesday, Momodu delivered a candid assessment of the current political terrain, describing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as “jittery” and determined to destabilize the PDP ahead of the next general elections.
“If the PDP is united, it has all it takes to wrest power from the APC in 2027, but forces against it won’t allow this to happen,” Momodu said during the live programme in Ibadan.
He acknowledged deep fractures within the PDP, even suggesting his own emotional detachment from the party: “My soul has already left the PDP. Only my body remains there.”
Momodu accused the APC of deliberately engineering divisions within the PDP to ensure it remains too weak to present a serious challenge. “The ruling party’s strategy is clear — keep the main opposition divided and distracted,” he claimed.
He also expressed frustration over what he described as internal sabotage within the PDP, saying some party members are being used to disrupt its cohesion. “The PDP is a law-abiding party and follows due process, but its progress is being hindered from within. Some of its members are working against it,” he said.
When asked about the prospects for change in 2027, Momodu didn’t mince words: “It’s nearly impossible to remove Tinubu without a formidable coalition. No single party can do it alone.”
He emphasized that any viable challenger to the president must also come “from the opposite direction” in terms of regional representation — a nod to Nigeria’s complex political geography and balance of power.
Momodu’s comments arrive amid rising political tensions and widespread debate over the future of opposition politics in Nigeria. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, his call for unity among opposition forces could mark the beginning of renewed realignments across the political spectrum.
