Mysteries From Elsbeth Season 2 That Need Answers

Spin-offs have been part of the history of television shows for a very long time. The sitcom Frasier was actually a spin-off of the very popular series Cheers. Three’s Company produced both The Ropers spin-off and Three’s a Crowd, which premiered following the original series finale. The Big Bang Theory has even produced two spin-offs, Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

Spin-offs are sometimes well-received, and sometimes they miss the mark. Elsbeth seems to be in the former category. Fans are enjoying the show, which is a spin-off of The Good Wife. It focuses on the character of Elsbeth Tascioni. The second season recently came to an end and fans are already speculating about what questions could be answered in season three.

Some Are Wondering If Elsbeth’s Cases Could Get Thrown Out In The Future

Elsbeth has to walk through the men’s wing when she arrives at the prison in the Season 2 finale. She comes across Joe Dillon on her way. Joe was a suspect from the first season, and he says that his case should be dropped. His reasoning is that since Elsbeth’s arrest is without bail, it means that any cases she worked on should be thrown out. His theory appears to be backed up by the fact her arrest was for harassing a witness, something that would cause others to question her investigative method.

It doesn’t seem to be a legitimate threat in this episode, though. Judge Dousant decided to drop the charges when Captain Wagner and Chandler proved to him that Crawford was guilty. Therefore, there will be no further investigation into this matter. But if Elsbeth’s consent decree came under fire, this would be a very different story. If that were to happen, it would cast doubt in the minds of everyone as to her ability to actually do her job. While this possibility has been shut down already, there’s no reason to believe it won’t happen in the future.

Elsbeth’s confidence in jail, despite being wrongfully imprisoned, shocked viewers. This is something showrunner Jonathan Tolins and star Carrie Preston spoke about during an interview with TV Insider. Carrie was asked where Elsbeth gets her confidence from and replied, “Elsbeth is somebody who always has one foot forward. She’s always assuming positive intent, even from murderers for better or worse. And when you’re in a prison, there are guards around, there are things like that around.”

She added, “But I think she realizes that she’s come to a place with all these people who might hate her, but they respect her. And they know that they ended up in jail because of her. So there is something there to — although maybe not love, something to admire about her. So we leaned into that. And also it was necessary for her, for us to just get her in relationships with others to solve the mystery of who killed Alex Modarian. If they all hated her, then we wouldn’t get her in the same room with them for very long. So we needed to do that as well.”

“At the very beginning, you see she is a little scared when she gets there and they’re all a little threatening,” Jonathan said. “But then once the murder happens, she has a mission and she has a purpose, and that always makes things easier for Elsbeth because she knows what she’s after.”

Jonathan even explained why the show will most likely not continue the storyline of Crawford’s murder. “There’ll be reverberations, but I think it’s a pretty open-and-shut case,” he told the outlet. “She was there, seen doing it, and she knew the consequences of what she was doing. She said she was a woman with nothing left to lose. It’s a very tragic story for her.”

Carra Patterson’s run as a series regular officially ended in the Season 2 finale. The character of Detective Kaya Blanke has been promoted to a special task force. However, with her training being located in Washington, D.C., this meant a sad farewell had to happen between Kaya and Elsbeth. After Elsbeth was released from jail, audiences saw an emotional tribute to Kaya at the precinct’s goodbye party.

However, the character of Kaya won’t be gone for good. Fans of the series can look forward to her popping up in future episodes as a guest star. But this does raise questions from those fans about Elsbeth’s future, particularly who her next partner will be. During an interview with TV Insider, Jonathan spoke about the possibilities for Elsbeth’s next companion officer.

He said that since Kaya has been an important person in Elsbeth’s life, she can’t be replaced. A friendship like the one they shared can’t be replicated so easily. This means the writers will have to create a new dynamic that is special in a different way. Fans have already theorized that her next partner might be one of the different officers who accompanied Elsbeth on her investigations after Kaya’s promotion. Jonathan said audiences will see more of these pairings in season three.

“I don’t want to shoehorn another character into exactly the same role that Kaya played in Elsbeth’s life,” he said. “I do think that Elsbeth usually must be working with a uniformed officer because she’s not a detective. She can’t just go to these places without someone. So we’ve started introducing some new characters.”

Jonathan said that viewers might not see just one partner with Elsbeth going forward, but several. “We had B as Nikki Reynolds and Ethan Slater as Chandler” in Season 2, Jonathan said, “and I think we’ll keep introducing some more.” He did, however, warn viewers that they might not see much more of Ethan.

“We love Ethan. I don’t know if we’d be able to have him as often because he’s very busy,” Jonathan said. “So we’re going to let things develop organically and see who will end up being there more often with Elsbeth. We may end up using our uniformed officers like we use our detectives, where we have a great stable, where you’re excited to see every one of them, but you don’t know which one it’ll be in each episode.”

Fans Are Curious About How Often Kaya Will Appear In Season 3

While we now know that Carra will appear as a guest star for the next season, we haven’t heard any specifics about the frequency of her appearances. Some theorize that if the series puts out as many episodes next season as they did with Season 2, Kaya will have plenty of opportunities to appear throughout. Kaya had previously promised Elsbeth twice that they would continue to have frozen yogurt dates. Therefore, it makes sense that she would keep popping up in an effort to maintain their friendship.

But that still leaves fans questioning exactly what these appearances will look like. Viewers will no doubt love to see her offering Elsbeth advice or just casually hanging out, but fans would especially love to see Kaya back at work with Captain Kershaw’s task force. Many would even get a kick out of seeing Elsbeth going undercover, as this would no doubt deliver comedic gold, earning several laughs. Watching her do it with Kaya would be even better.

The aftermath of Elsbeth’s presence at Judge Milton Crawford’s murder is another thing fans can expect to see. Elsbeth’s professional life could be affected in many ways as a result. Delia Kirby was driven to murder Crawford because he killed her lover, Andy, and framed her for the murder.

“I don’t think this will turn into [covering] the trial of Delia Kirby. I think that’s done,” Jonathan said. “But I do feel that the way that whole experience affects Elsbeth — and the way people perceive Elsbeth because of her perceived connection to what happened — that will continue.”

Following a memorable tribute to the musical Chicago, Elsbeth is now a free woman. “Our show, as much as we love our beautiful prison set that we built, we kind of stay in glamorous places,” Jonathan said. The usual format of the show, investigating the “lifestyles and murders of the rich and famous,” will now resume, Jonathan said.

However, he revealed he hopes to keep a list of various guest stars for future episodes. Jonathan teased fans, “We are not done looking at what happens to some of our people after Elsbeth seems to be finished with them in their original episode.”
