Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has honored 22 athletes who tragically died in a May 2025 road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State. During a memorial ceremony at Government House, the governor announced that the Kano State Sports Institute will be renamed Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute, just as the Kano State Sports Commission will become Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission.

“These heroes brought glory to Kano through their exceptional performances. Their legacy must endure,” Governor Yusuf stated. The decision came during a visit by representatives of First Lady Remi Tinubu, who presented ₦110 million in support to the bereaved families.

The governor praised the First Lady’s gesture, noting: “This compassionate aid brings solace to families enduring profound loss.” He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting the victims’ relatives.

The fatal incident, which occurred 5 km from Kano, stunned Nigeria’s sports community. The athletes were returning after medal-winning performances at the national tournament.

In a statement, the governor’s spokesperson, Mustapha Muhammad, emphasized: “Their sacrifice for Kano’s sporting excellence demands eternal recognition. These renamed institutions will forever inspire future generations.”

The state government has declared that the memorial sites will feature plaques listing all 22 athletes’ names, with annual sporting events planned to perpetuate their legacy.
