•Bode George urges Tinubu to reinstate Fubara
Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed confidence in the direction the state is taking amid the ongoing political challenges, stating that the state will emerge stronger and more united at the end.
The governor described the period as a call to action, one that requires the use of the state’s collective creativity, energy, and commitment to overcome the challenges ahead.
Accordingly, Fubara restated his strong commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting fundamental human rights, and ensuring that all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, can actively participate in the democratic process.
In his Democracy Day message delivered in Port Harcourt, Fubara also emphasised his administration’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property through robust security strategies. He pledged to continue defending the state’s interests and to maintain a government that values inclusivity, transparency, and accountability.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 26 years of continuous democratic rule, the governor called for collaboration across political divides to build a society where every citizen is heard, supported to achieve their potential, and encouraged to contribute to collective progress.
He acknowledged the recent political turbulence in Rivers State, which disrupted democratic governance, noting that it served as a reminder of how delicate democracy can be. He stressed that democracy must be actively protected and nurtured to remain strong and meaningful.
MEANWHILE, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode Ibiyinka George, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to, in the spirit of the June 12 anniversary, return Fubara to office.
Fubara was suspended by Tinubu on March 18 due to political tension in the oil-bearing state. Last week, Fubara visited Tinubu in Lagos during the Sallah celebration.
George, in an open letter to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the June 12, 1993, presidential election won by the late M.K.O. Abiola but annulled on June 23, 1993, by General Ibrahim Babangida, said: “If Tinubu could forgive Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, then he should extend the same gesture to Fubara”.
