The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bill seeking to extend the capital component implementation of the 2024 Appropriation Act from June 30 to December 31, 2025.
The bill, titled A Bill for an Act to Amend the 2024 Appropriation Act to Further Extend the Capital Components of the Act From 30th June 2025 to 31st December 2025 and for Related Matters (HB.2404), was sponsored by the Leader of the House, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, who represents Owan Federal Constituency, Edo State.
The bill passed through the second and third readings at the lower legislative chamber during plenary on Tuesday.
It was not subjected to debate, as lawmakers responded with an overwhelming chorus of “aye” when it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker.
Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, said the extension was necessary because the 2024 budget has not been adequately funded.
This marks the second time the implementation of the capital component of the budget is being extended.
The House had earlier passed an amendment in December 2024, shifting the deadline from December 31 to June 30, 2025.
In December 2023, the National Assembly passed the 2024 Appropriation Bill, increasing its size from the N27.5 trillion proposed by the President to N28.7 trillion.
In July 2024, the National Assembly increased the budget by N6.2 trillion, bringing the total to N35 trillion, up from the N28.7 trillion signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on January 1, 2024.
