Throughout the history of Top Chef, fans of the beloved reality show have sometimes been disappointed by how things have been handled. For example, fans have felt seasons were letdowns, that chefs didn’t deserve to win because someone else was robbed, and that Last Chance Kitchen needs to be reworked. Top Chef fans have also been sad to see chefs fail because competing on the show is a lot harder than some viewers realize.
On top of Top Chef sometimes being disappointing, one of the other truths about the show is how heartbreaking it can be. A recent episode is a perfect example of that, because viewers were shocked by how invested a chef was after they learned a heartbreaking and shocking piece of news.

As the episode progressed, Tristen yet again proved how incredible he is by winning the elimination challenge after everything he’d gone through.
Winning that at anytime is impressive, but doing that after being hit with truly tragic news like the loss of your father is nearly superhuman.
To underline what he accomplished, after being announced as the winner, Tristen admitted how hard continuing to cook had been with tears in his eyes.
“I am more proud of my team than I am myself, but I am really proud that I got through the day. It was a really hard cook for me, honestly. I mean, I found out my my father passed away. So trying to stay on, you know what I mean, was hard all day.”

Top Chef: Destination Canada featured a guest judge that created several cringey moments, but it wasn’t their fault.
It is worth noting that Tristen’s actions also prove how dedicated many Top Chef competitors’ loved ones are to the opportunity. After all, when Tristen revealed his father was in a coma, he stated that his mom told him to keep fighting to win the show. Tristen also explained that his mom’s words had inspired him to continue competing.
“My mom says he would never want you to quit on this dream. Don’t you dare leave. So I will do what he would want me to do.”
Later during the same episode, Tristen stated that he wouldn’t disrespect his father by leaving the show.
“[Russell has] always been one of the most supportive people in my life. When someone believes in you that much, you don’t wanna let them down. And so I do not wanna disrespect my family by giving up. I was told to stay, and I listened to my parents.”
Based on Russell’s description of his relationship with his father, the chef’s dad seemed to be a great man who was loved by his family. With that in mind, it seems very clear that Tristen and his mother would have felt overcome by grief. Despite that, Tristen and his mom agreed to forego coming together to comfort each other at a time of overwhelming pain. If that doesn’t prove how much Top Chef chefs and their loved ones care about the show, nothing could.
