The Pitt’s Executive Producers Said Creating A Spin-Off Is ‘Possible’ Already

During The Pitt’s first season, it became one of the best TV shows for many reasons, including the little details. After all, fans have been blown away by how the finale called back to the premiere, by how the show depicts positive masculinity, and how touching the show can be. On top of that, there is no doubt that fans were deeply affected by Dr. Robby’s breakdown and were angered when Dr. McKay was arrested.

Since The Pitt fans are so invested in the show, they were overjoyed to learn about the plans for the second season. However, while fans were trying to figure out which characters will return for the second season, most didn’t realize that the show’s executive producers said a spin-off was “possible.”

The Pitt Could Get A Spin-Off Already, According To Its Executive Producers

As an article from The Television Academy reveals, R. Scott Gemmill and John Wells spent years working on the medical drama ER with Noah Wyle. R. Scott then went on to be credited as The Pitt’s creator on IMDb and both men worked on the hit new medical drama as executive producers.

Since R. Scott and John are two of the people who are in charge of The Pitt, there is a lot of interest in what they have to say about the show. For that reason, it was very exciting when Collider’s Chris McPherson spoke to R. Scott and John in April 2025.

During that conversation, the two men had fascinating things to say about the hit medical drama they helped make a success. Most notably, John and R. Scott both expressed openness to the idea of The Pitt getting a spin-off already.

Since The Pitt has become such a huge hit, it can be easy to forget how young the show actually is. After all, the first episode of The Pitt premiered on Max on January 9th, 2025.

Even though The Pitt has only been around for a matter of weeks at this point, John told Collider that there was a possibility of creating a spin-off from the medical drama already.

It’s possible that there will be a season of the show that takes place on the night shift. Whether we would franchise it after…?

From there, John went on to reflect on the idea of already potentially considering a spin-off for The Pitt.

Looking back at the history of television, one thing quickly becomes clear. When a show becomes successful, it doesn’t take long for the people in charge to want to create more like it. With that in mind, it seems hard to imagine Max turning down the chance to produce a spin-off of The Pitt.

In April 2025, Tatler published an article looking at how The Pitt became Max’s biggest hit. That article pointed to The Pitt getting rave reviews as being one of the core reasons why the show has become a mammoth success for Max.

However, while talking to Collider, John spoke about feeling like working on a The Pitt spin-off already would be presumptuous.

I think that it would be a little arrogant on our part to think that there’s that much enthusiasm for the show [already].

After stating that a spin-off is a possibility, John told Collider that the team behind the show is more focused on The Pitt Season 2.

“It’s nice to keep people excited about when it comes back [for Season 2] before we start thinking about how we do five versions of something.”

From there, The Pitt’s creator, who was part of the same interview, commented on possible spin-offs.

While R. Scott called the interest in a The Pitt spin-off “very complimentary,” he didn’t seem invested in that possibility. Instead, R. Scott spoke to Collider about being interested in future seasons of The Pitt focusing on the staff of the titular hospital in different circumstances.

“In success, I would love to do a night shift [season]. We talked about it. It just comes with its own difficulties. I would also love to do a shift in the winter time in Pittsburgh.”

While John and R. Scott clearly seemed like they aren’t going to focus on a spin-off anytime soon, the fact that is a possibility at all seems stunning.

After all, it typically takes many years of a show being a major success before anyone of note is talking about spin-offs.

The Team Behind The Pitt Is Being Sued Over The Show Allegedly Being A Spin-Off Itself

Before The Pitt’s executive producers were asked about the show getting a spin-off, the team behind the show was sued. As a February 2025 Rolling Stone article details, the team behind The Pitt was sued by people claiming that the show was a de facto spin-off of sorts.

As most The Pitt fans already know, Noah Wyle starred in the medical drama ER for years earlier in his career. For those that don’t know, ER was created by Michael Crichton, who passed away in 2008.

According to the lawsuit filed against the team behind The Pitt, no ER spin-offs or reboots could be produced without Michael Crichton’s consent. Since he passed away, it is now the beneficiaries of Michael Crichton’s estate that would need to consent to a new show.

Rolling Stone’s article reveals that, according to the lawsuit, the team behind The Pitt originally tried to get permission to produce an ER reboot. However, the article quotes the lawsuit’s claim about how The Pitt’s team reacted when they failed to get permission.

“[Warner Bros.] simply moved the show from Chicago to Pittsburgh, rebranded it The Pitt, and has plowed ahead without any attribution or compensation for Crichton and his heirs.”

In short, the lawsuit basically alleges that The Pitt is an unofficial ER spin-off and Rolling Stone ruled that the legal battle could move forward. That said, Rolling Stone’s article also states that the team behind The Pitt completely denied the lawsuit’s allegations. Furthermore, The Pitt‘s team claim that the lawsuit is frivolous and threatens to violate their freedom of speech. At this point, there is no way to know if there will be a settlement or who will win in court if it comes to that.
