St. Denis Medical’s Kahyun Kim And Mekki Leeper Revealed How They Feel About Their Characters’ Will They Won’t They Relationship

Throughout the history of TV show sitcoms, there have been several tropes that have popped up over and over again. While that may seem like a bad thing, there is a very good reason for that. No matter if each use of those tropes are unoriginal, the fact is that TV audiences tend to love seeing them play out over and over.

As any sitcom fan will likely already know, one of the genre’s most popular tropes is the will they won’t they relationship. During the first season of St. Denis Medical, fans saw another example of that trope between the two nurses, Matt and Serena. After portraying a will they won’t they couple, the actors who played those roles, Kahyun Kim and Mekki Leeper, had different feelings about bringing that trope to life.

St. Denis Medical‘s Mekki Leeper Found It “Nerve-Wracking” To Portray One Half Of A Will They Won’t They Couple

In 2023, the world seemed to discover Mekki Leeper thanks to his role in the hit show Jury Duty. Cast as an incredibly innocent young man on the show who was part of the titular jury, Mekki’s comedy skills and ability to seem uncomfortable regularly made viewers laugh.

Thankfully for Mekki and his fans, he is now starring in the sitcom St. Denis Medical as the character Matt. Similar to his Jury Duty character, Matt is an innocent character who makes viewers laugh because of how naive he is.

On top of being naive and trying to understand his job, Mekki’s character Matt’s main storyline is that he has fallen for the character Serena. As a result, Matt and Serena have become St. Denis Medical’s will they won’t they couple. As it turns out, however, Mekki wasn’t comfortable at first portraying one half of a will they won’t they couple.

In April 2025, Today interviewed Kahyun Kim and Mekki Leeper together about their St. Denis Medical roles.

During that conversation, Mekki revealed how he reacted to being asked if he could portray half of a will they won’t they couple.

It’s a little like, ‘No, man, I’m not John Krasinski, d***.’ So it was nerve-wracking at first.

As hilarious as Mekki’s comment was, it is worth noting that he likely reacted that way partially because of how he was asked about the situation.

As Mekki explained, he was asked about the potential TV romance in a way that could have made him feel pressured.

According to Famous Birthdays, Mekki Leeper was born on September 9th, 1994 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That makes Mekki 30 years old as of May 2025.

According to what he told Today, Mekki has been asked if he could pull off being part of the romance storyline.

“When people are like, ‘Hey, so we were thinking that you guys are maybe kind of as likable as the most likable TV couple in history — do you think you can be charming on that level?””

Thankfully for Mekki, however, he told Today that something important has made portraying half of a will they won’t they couple easier for him. As he explained, St. Denis Medical’s stellar scripts helped him be part of a romance storyline.

“But then, you know, they write these really brilliant characters, and you kind of focus more, I think for me, like I’m just being Matt. And then it becomes really natural. Like, oh, if I’m this kind of sheltered, nervous guy, it’s very easy to figure out how he would be with Serena.”

Based on what Mekki said next, however, it still seems clear that he was really nervous about the romance storyline at first.

After explaining how he became comfortable with the storyline to Today, Mekki went back to once again explain how worried he was at first.

At first it was just kind of like, ‘What are we going to do?’

St. Denis Medical’s Kahyun Kim Never Worried About Playing Her Half Of The Will They Won’t They Couple

During episodes of St. Denis Medical, Mekki Leeper’s character, Matt, almost always seems somewhat nervous. On the other hand, Kahyun Kim’s character, Serena, almost always seems confident in herself. As it turns out, Mekki and Kahyun reacted to their romance storyline like their characters would. After all, Kahyun revealed she was instantly confident in portraying her half of the storyline.

During the aforementioned Today interview, Kahyun listened to Mekki describe how nervous he was to portray half of a couple.

According to Famous Birthdays, Kahyun Kim was born on October 18th, 1989 in Los Angeles, California. That would make Kahyun 35 years old as of May 2025.

After Mekki made those comments, Kahyun spoke up and said she was sure that she could be part of an onscreen will they won’t they couple.

Speak for yourself, because I was like, ‘I got this.’

Today’s article went on to reveal that Mekki laughed in response to Kahyun’s confident comment.

While continuing to talk to Today about the romance storyline, Kahyun admitted that the storyline was easier for her because her character didn’t know about Matt’s crush.

“I think it’s fun. I think the writers do such a good job at establishing the characters. … It’s different for me, because I think Serena really had no [idea]. I don’t have to play the crush. I don’t have the romantic part yet.”

Kahyun then stated that playing her half of the couple may feel different during the second season now that her character knows about Matt’s feelings. “Now being Season 2, now that the awareness is there, I’m wondering how different it will feel as Serena and as an actor.”

Kahyun finished her comments to Today on the topic by remarking about why working with Mekki makes the storyline easy for her.

“But, I mean, it’s really easy. All jokes aside, it’s really easy to act with Mekki … It’s like, so, so hard to watch, but at the same time, it’s so cute. And I think Mekki does such a good job. He’s so likable.”

That said, Kahyun joked that Mekki is nothing like his likable St. Denis Medical character. “Like, it’s insane, because in real life, he’s a terrible person. So it’s crazy.”
