Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southeast at the weekend intensified their campaign to deepen the party’s acceptability in the region.
Rising from their Stakeholders meeting in Enugu, they urged for more membership of all Igbo indigenes in the party as a way for the region to benefit.
The leaders said that their appeal is for the betterment of Ndigbo to be in the mainstream of a national ruling political party instead of remaining in the periphery that attracts no dividend.
They made the plea while addressing newsmen shortly after the APC South East Select Leaders Consultative Meeting in Enugu.
Among the APC leaders in the zone that attended the meeting were the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu; the former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim; Governors of Imo and Ebonyi states, Hope Uzodinma and Francis Nwifuru, respectively; Senator Orji Uzor Kalu; the Minister for Innovation, Sciences and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji; Dozie Ikedife Jnr; and the executive members of the APC zonal leadership of the APC.
Addressing newsmen on their behalf, Governor Uzodinma said that the meeting resolved to continue to work towards making the APC a dominant party in the region.
He said that the meeting was geared towards finding ways to make people of the South East region see reasons to join the ruling political party.
“You must have seen how sitting Governors in the other geopolitical zones are now joining the APC. It is by joining the APC, which is in charge of the government at the center in Nigeria and other sub-national governments, that the South East will be very close to the corridors of power,” Uzodinma said.
He described it as a thing of joy that the serving Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Governors of Imo and Ebonyi States, members of the National Assembly, Ministers, and other senior functionaries of the federal government from the region are under the platform of the APC.
“We have decided to see the South East as a family, tolerate each other’s shortcomings, and work as a formidable team to achieve the desired results,” Uzodimma said.
