Ondo State has embarked on its 2023 Hajj pilgrimage airlift, sending the first cohort of 316 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia on Monday. The milestone departure, organized by the Ondo State Muslim Welfare Board, marks the beginning of a three-day operation to transport 735 registered pilgrims from the state to Islam’s holiest sites.

Alhaji Dhikirulahi Chandy-Adam, Chairman of the Ondo State Muslim Welfare Board, confirmed the launch in an exclusive phone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He emphasized that the first batch departed Ilorin International Airport at 1:00 p.m. local time, following rigorous health and logistical preparations.

“All pilgrims have been vaccinated against yellow fever and meningitis, in compliance with international travel requirements,” Chandy-Adam stated. “Arrangements began early this morning to ensure a seamless process for this sacred journey.”

The chairman revealed that the remaining pilgrims will be airlifted in two subsequent batches on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the state coordinating closely with Saudi authorities and airline operators. He urged travelers to uphold the spiritual essence of Hajj, advising, “Carry with you your faith, devotion, and reverence for Allah. This pilgrimage is not just a physical journey but a profound act of worship.”

Chandy-Adam also stressed adherence to Saudi Arabia’s regulations, reminding pilgrims to respect local laws and cultural norms. “The success of this exercise hinges on discipline and cooperation. We trust our pilgrims to represent Ondo State with dignity,” he added.

Hajj, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, draws millions of Muslims annually to Mecca. For Ondo’s pilgrims, the airlift represents the culmination of months of spiritual and logistical preparation. The state’s delegation is expected to join global faithful in performing rites set to begin later this month.

As the first wave of pilgrims embarks on their spiritual odyssey, families and well-wishers across Ondo await their return, hopeful for a journey marked by peace, reflection, and divine fulfillment.
