A 33-year-old man, Gimba Sheneni, has been arrested for allegedly abducting his neighbour’s daughter in Paikon Bassa community in Abaji Area Council of Abuja.
One of the vigilantes in the area, Dangana Bala, told Daily Trust that the suspect was arrested following a report from the parents of the young woman that their daughter had been missing for some weeks.
He said the woman’s parents suspected the man, who had been dating their daughter secretly.
He said the vigilantes, upon receiving the information, swiftly alerted their members in neighbouring Dafa village and that the woman was traced to Tukurwa village in Kwali Area Council last Sunday
He said the vigilantes later discovered that the man went out on the eve of Easter with the girl on a motorcycle and camped her at his friend’s house in the community.
“Actually, the girl’s parents have been complaining that the man had been dating their daughter secretly. They even warned her to stay away from the man,” he said.
“On Sunday, our vigilante members in Dafa saw the girl and the man on a bike, and they immediately alerted us, and we moved to the neighbouring Tukurwa village to arrest the man in his friend’s house.
“They said the man had earlier denied taking the girl away when her parents approached him, demanding the whereabouts of their daughter.
“We later learnt that the man had been dating the girl for over a year with the intention of marrying her, but the parents disagreed despite his spending money on her.”
Bala said the man and his friend, whose house the girl was found in, had been handed over to security personnel in Kwali.
Police in the area confirmed the incident.
