Ekiti Ex-Commissioner Otitoju Credits Fayose for Shaping His Legacy

Ola Akinwunmi

In a reflective and impassioned account shared ahead of his 70th birthday, former Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, Sports, Culture, and Social Development, Kayode Otitoju, detailed the defining moments of his political journey—a path marked by personal sacrifice, resilient campaigning, and key alliances that forged his continued relevance on Nigeria’s political stage.

Otitoju, whose storied career has seen him navigate turbulent political waters, credited former Governor Ayodele Fayose’s political sagacity for playing a pivotal role in his ascent. “I have been shaped by a series of sacrifices and decisive moments,” Otitoju declared, recalling the challenges and triumphs that have come to define his tenure in public service.

In one of the more dramatic episodes of his career, Otitoju recounted a last-minute episode that altered the course of his political destiny. Facing a critical deadline to submit his nomination for the National Conscience Party’s senatorial candidacy in Ekiti North, the activist lawyer Femi Falana became an unlikely ally.

Hesitant at the prospect of signing the nomination form himself, Otitoju’s wife swiftly intervened by penning his name on a sheet—a gesture that Falana humorously insisted be redone in Otitoju’s own handwriting. “That midnight signature not only sealed my fate as a candidate but also kick-started a campaign season that saw us, alongside Falana and the late Gani Fawehinmi, challenge established political orders,” Otitoju recalled.

Though he did not secure the senatorial seat, the effort significantly undermined the then-dominant Alliance for Democracy, delivering notable blows that paved the way for his later strategic moves. His campaign under the banner of the National Conscience Party secured key victories in two state Assembly seats and two wards in Ekiti North, signaling a shift in regional political dynamics.

Following the 2003 electoral battles, Otitoju aligned himself with the Peoples Democratic Party in a tactical move designed to curtail the rising influence of the Alliance for Democracy in governorship contests. “It was a form of divine vengeance for the wrongs I had suffered—a retribution that reshaped the political landscape,” he asserted.

This maneuver, along with his demonstrated loyalty and influential connections, eventually earned him critical appointments within the PDP framework. One such moment of profound gratitude came when Otitoju stood as surety for Governor Fayose’s bail during a turbulent period when the former governor was detained by the EFCC. This act, steeped in both personal loyalty and political pragmatism, underscored the deep bonds formed over years of alliance and mutual support.

Otitoju’s journey has not been without financial and personal cost. With a successful car dealership, Jukot Motors, serving as his early financial bedrock, he candidly admitted, “Politics made me sell vehicles, land, and houses in Lagos.” Yet he emphasized that these sacrifices were never in vain. His contributions have not only advanced his political ambitions but also empowered the voiceless and highlighted community issues—signaling that true public service often comes at a personal price.

Beyond his political maneuvering, Otitoju has left an indelible mark on public service. His role as Chairman of the Lekki Residents Association saw him lead urban rejuvenation efforts in Lekki Phase 1, while his tenure at the Securities and Exchange Commission was characterized by decisive leadership that secured a permanent headquarters for the agency. His unwavering belief in the judiciary and reliance on legal channels to resolve conflicts have consistently translated into victories, reinforcing his reputation as a stalwart of resolute governance.“As I turn 70, I feel fulfilled,” Otitoju reflected.

His sentiments echo a lifelong commitment to serving not only as a political actor but also as an advocate for humanity and community upliftment. His journey, marked by defining moments of personal sacrifice, tactical brilliance, and unwavering loyalty, stands as a testament to the transformative power of political courage and conviction.
