A loud explosion shook the area around Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja on Monday, leaving one person dead and another injured in what security sources suspect was a failed suicide bombing attempt.
The blast, which occurred in the early afternoon, sent panic through the neighbourhood as bystanders scrambled for safety. Eyewitnesses said the victim, believed to be the bomber, died instantly when an explosive device—possibly hidden in a rubber container—detonated near the military base.
“I just heard a loud bang, and people started running. When I got closer, I saw someone lying still,” said a nearby food vendor who asked not to be named. “We were all scared. Nobody knew what was happening.”
Security personnel arrived quickly, sealing off the area and moving bystanders away while emergency responders attended to the injured. One other person caught in the blast was taken to a nearby hospital.
Military personnel who responded to the scene told reporters that while the blast initially appeared to be the result of a suicide bombing, early investigations pointed in a different direction.
It is believed that the explosive may have been detonated remotely, possibly using a mobile phone, rather than being strapped to or carried by the deceased.
