Since Blue Bloods became a hit TV show, it has spawned a huge fan following who want to know things like why Jennifer Esposito left the show. Similarly, fans also want to know about why Tom Selleck got praised for the show, his willingness to change his iconic look, and the surprising lifestyle he leads. Since it ended, Blue Bloods’ cast won’t be making the fortune they were being paid for the show, aside from Donnie Wahlberg, who is starring in an upcoming spin-off.
When it was announced that Donnie would be starring in the upcoming spin-off, Boston Blue, fans couldn’t know what to think. After all, there have been some truly horrible spin-offs over the years. However, Donnie recently made some comments that made Blue Bloods fans very excited about Boston Blue.
Donnie Wahlberg Hinted That Boston Blue Will Bring Back Popular Characters From The Franchise’s Past
When a show has been on the air for many years, it becomes easy for fans to really invest in its characters. As a result, a show’s finale airing can feel really sad for fans who want to see more of their favorite characters.
However, when a show is successful enough to spawn a spin-off, that can be a great way to give fans more to look forward to. Fortunately for the fans of Blue Bloods, the franchise will continue since that show is getting a spin-off called Boston Blue.
As Blue Blood fans will likely already know, Boston Blue is set to star Donnie Wahlberg as he continues to portray Detective Danny Reagan. During a recent interview, Donnie gave fans more to be excited about when he hinted that Boston Blue would give fans of Blue Bloods more to look forward to.
In April 2025, a Collider article summarized Donnie’s appearance on the “Morning Magic” podcast.

During the resulting conversation, Donnie hinted that Boston Blue may feature appearances by other former Blue Bloods stars.
It will be a Danny Reagan-based show, but the Reagans are only a phone call away, and Danny Reagan likes to use the phone, that’s all I’ll say.
For anyone who has followed Blue Bloods’ success, a comment like that from Donnie opens up a lot of possibilities.

The Pitt’s Final Moments Featured A Very Revealing Line Of Dialogue Fans Are Overlooking
The final moments of The Pitt’s Season 1 finale included a revealing line of dialogue that most fans seem to be overlooking.
Since Blue Bloods followed the Reagan family as they work in the NYPD, viewers were introduced to many members of the show’s main clan. Based on Donnie’s remark about his character being able to call his family during episodes of Boston Blue, that means that a lot of Blue Bloods characters could show up on the spin-off.
In October 2024, Tom Selleck spoke to TV Insider about Blue Bloods ending. During that discussion, Tom described how emotional the moment was when he finished filming his final Blue Bloods scene alongside many of his co-stars. “We were shooting for hours and all of a sudden, they said ‘Well, that was the last shot.’ I always wanted to say this poem, “Love Is Not All” by Edna St. Vincent Millay. There was crying and there was an enormous amount of hugs. Donnie was really broken up; he didn’t say much. Bridget spoke. Just about everybody said something. Vanessa [Ray] was pretty beat up by the experience.”
Perhaps the most obvious Blue Bloods character who could show up on Boston Blue is Tom Selleck’s New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan.
In December 2024, Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg were interviewed by Variety together.
In October 2024, Screen Rant published an article focused on Tom Selleck’s remarks about Blue Bloods being canceled by CBS. That article argued that Tom was completely right to be frustrated by Blue Blood’s cancellation.
During that discussion, Tom made it very clear that he didn’t want Blue Bloods to end. Not only that, Tom told the outlet that he even came up with an idea about how Blue Bloods could continue.
“I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do ten episodes a year. But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience. I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it.”
Based on comments like that, it seems very likely that Tom would be excited to continue portraying his Blue Bloods character by appearing on Boston Blue.

Why I believe that an episode from Chicago Med’s 10th season is the best in the history of the show.
As far as Blue Bloods’ starring cast, Donnie’s comments imply it possible that many of them could appear on Boston Blue. For example, the list of actors who could still show up includes Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Len Cariou, and Vanessa Ray.
Of course, that is to say nothing about the other Blue Bloods characters who were members of the Reagan family. After all, Blue Bloods introduced other characters who were members of the Reagan family who weren’t portrayed by any of the show’s official stars.
While it may seem like a long shot that all of those characters and more could show up on Boston Blue, fans should remain hopeful. After all, it is well-known that Donnie loved starring in Blue Bloods with his co-stars. As a result, it seems very likely that Donnie would want to include as many of his former co-stars as possible.
With that in mind, it is important to note that Donnie isn’t only starring in Boston Blue. During the aforementioned podcast interview that was summarized by Collider, Donnie also spoke about working on Boston Blue as one of the upcoming show’s producers.
“I can’t tell a lot of stuff about it other than at this point, I’m very humbled to be producing the show with Jerry Bruckheimer and some incredible writers and producers known as the Brandons. It’s an honor to keep the Blue Bloods tradition alive, and I think that’s what I’ll be doing with the show.”
Blue Bloods Fans Want More Reagan Family Spin-Offs
In April 2025, Screen Rant posted a thread asking Blue Bloods fans about the upcoming spin-off, Boston Blue. To be more specific, the outlet asked fans if they wanted to see a spin-off based around Jamie or Joe instead of Danny. Many of the responses were really revealing about how many fans wanted to see more of the Reagan family.

This Scene From ‘The Pitt’ Was So Meaningful It Changed Noah Wyle’s Life
‘The Pitt’ is such a powerful show that a scene from it managed to change the life of its star, Noah Wyle.
In response to the Screen Rant’s post, there was a response calling for Blue Bloods to just continue instead of creating spin-offs.
Another response argued that CBS was right to move forward with the spin-off, Boston Blue, as planned.
However, the majority of the responses to Screen Rant’s post called for there to be spin-offs that involved Danny, Joe, and Jamie.
It is unclear if those responses wanted three spin-offs with each focusing on Jamie, Joe, or Danny, or one spin-off with all three characters. What is clear, however, is that fans really seem like they want to see more stories based around Blue Bloods’ Reagan family.
