Since Chicago Med premiered, the show has introduced several characters that fans quickly grew to love. After all, there is absolutely no doubt that most fans have grown to love characters like April Sexton, Dr. Crockett Marcel, and more. That said, it isn’t any secret that most fans have special bonds with Sharon Goodwin, Maggie Lockwood, and Dr. Daniel Charles. Given how much fans have really bonded with those characters, it seems like the show would be very careful with how they are handled.

Unfortunately for Chicago Med fans, all three of those characters have been handled in ways that fans hated. A perfect example of that is the fact that Chicago Med needs to stop doing something specific with Dr. Daniel Charles immediately.

Over the last several decades, there have been different styles of medical shows. For example, there have been medical shows that have tried to realistically depict what life is like for doctors, nurses, and personnel, including ER and The Pitt. On the other end of the spectrum are medical shows like Grey’s Anatomy that use a hospital as the background for soap opera style drama.

While Chicago Med definitely does give viewers an idea of how stressful emergency medicine is, it falls more into the latter group. Definitely the kind of show that can be very dramatic, every Chicago Med character gets put through the wringer.

With that in mind, it may seem silly to suggest that Oliver Platt’s character, Dr. Daniel Charles, should be immune from the show’s overly dramatic storylines. That said, the team behind Chicago Med really should stop making Dr. Charles’ personal life storylines so miserable for fans.

Easily the most lovable Chicago Med doctor ever, Dr. Charles is the character that virtually every viewer roots for. As a result, the truth is that many fans want to see Dr. Charles find someone to love.

Since fans want Dr. Charles to find love, it makes sense that Chicago Med’s writers have made his romances a source for drama. That said, some storylines about Dr. Charles’ love life are the epitome of what the show has to stop doing with the character.

Since Chicago Med is a drama series, every fan expects Dr. Charles to be forced to cope with some wild storylines. However, Chicago Med viewers don’t want to see Dr. Charles be involved in romantic relationships that only seem to make fans feel miserable.

Long before joining the cast of Chicago Med, Oliver Platt became a popular and acclaimed actor. A muliple-time award nominee, Olver won his first Screen Actors Guild Award in 2024 when he and The Bear’s other stars won Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

One example of a Dr. Charles romance that made fans feel creeped out is when he dated his psychiatrist, Lonnie Richardson. While it was great to see Nora Dunn on the show, their relationship always felt gross given the role of authority she’d previously played in his life.

The first reason why every Liliana scene was a drag to watch was the utter lack of chemistry. While the show tried to make it feel like Dr. Charles and Liliana loved each other, it never once felt like they had a real connection.

Secondly, Liliana never seemed to being any happiness into Dr. Charles’ life. Aside from the fact that being with her allowed him to avoid being alone, virtually every scene featuring Dr. Charles and Liliana seemed to focus on some obligation he had to her. Easily the biggest reason why Liliana made Chicago Med fans feel miserable was the introduction of her brother. A vaguely bad guy who seemed to run scams and appeared to be a non-specific criminal, Pawel Wapniarski was a terrible character.

A poorly executed stereotype of a character, Chicago Med never fully committed to Pawel becoming a full-fledged problem in Dr. Charles’ life. Instead, Pawel remained an off-and-on problem in Dr. Charles’ life that hinted at a threat that never really was realized.

Ultimately, Liliana, Pawel, and everything that involved them seemed like a distraction that never introduced anything interesting to Chicago Med. The fact that something that negative involved Dr. Charles, a character who fans love so much, makes their presence so much worse. With that in mind, the team behind Chicago Med needs to be careful to stop introducing characters and storylines involving Dr. Charles that will only make fans feel miserable for him.

These Dr. Daniel Charles Chicago Med Storylines Did Drama Right

During Season 9 of Chicago Med, Luke Mitchell portrayed Dr. Mitch Ripley, a new doctor at the hospital with a complicated past. Not long after he was introduced, fans learned that Dr. Ripley was treated by Dr. Charles in his youth and felt like he’d been abandoned.

After Dr. Ripley initially didn’t trust Dr. Charles and them working together was tense, a shared respect eventually developed. Even after that, more drama was introduced into their relationship before Dr. Ripley left the show.

The mother of Dr. Charles’ eldest daughter, Caroline “CeCe” Charles was introduced as his ex-wife. The former couple wound up reuniting and even got remarried, but that didn’t mean that their relationship was easy.

Depicted as a realistic couple who sometimes got on each other’s nerves, Dr. Charles and CeCe also had to deal with her breast cancer battle. Tragically, CeCe lost her life to the terrible disease in a moment that brought a lot of sadness to Dr. Charles. However, after reuniting and remarrying, Dr. Charles and CeCe also clearly loved each other and made each other happy.

These are the kinds of dramatic storylines involving Dr. Charles that fans can embrace. After all, both storylines were sad and frustrating, but also led to happy moments and growth for Dr. Charles.
