In what’s being called one of the biggest upsets of Belize’s 2025 General Elections, Shyne Barrow has officially lost his Parliament seat, marking the end of his short-lived political career in Belize’s House of Representatives.
The former Bad Boy rapper-turned-politician, once seen as the future of the UDP (United Democratic Party), was dealt a humiliating defeat, securing only 318 votes compared to 601 votes for Lee Mark Chang, a candidate backed by Shyne’s political rivals. PUP candidate Lawrence Ellis finished in second place with 503 votes, proving that the UDP’s hold on the constituency had completely crumbled.
A Party Divided: Shyne’s Fall From Power
Despite running under the UDP banner, Shyne’s downfall was fueled by internal party warfare. His opponent, Chang, had the backing of Tracy Panton’s faction, which had been at war with Shyne for control of the party.
That infighting cost him dearly—many UDP voters simply stayed home, while others turned to Chang in frustration.
Chang had publicly called Shyne a “cancer” to the UDP, accusing him of making empty promises and damaging the party’s credibility.
His victory isn’t just a personal win, it’s a historic moment for Belize, as he becomes the first Belizean-Chinese representative in the House of Representatives.
Shyne Admits Defeat, Confirms He’ll Step Down
With his political career in shambles, Shyne confirmed that he will resign as UDP leader once a new leader is elected.
“You can’t be leader of the UDP if you’re not a member of the House, and I would not want to be appointed as a senator just to hold on to the leadership,” he stated.
His resignation will trigger a leadership battle in the already fractured UDP. With his faction collapsing and Tracy Panton’s allies gaining influence, the party is in damage control mode—and it’ll be a long road before they can mount a serious political comeback.
