As November 8, 2025, Governorship and National Assembly by-elections are fast approaching in Anambra State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured to conduct a transparent and credible election in the state.
Recall that the gubernatorial and two by-elections would be held following the demise of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, representing Anambra South Senatorial Zone last year, and also the House of Assembly member representing Onitsha North.
Federal Constituency, Justice Azuka, of the Labour Party (LP) was kidnapped and later murdered by hoodlums.
The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, gave the assurance, yesterday, at the INEC headquarters, Awka, during an interactive session with newsmen, insisting that the media has maintained a strong partnership with the commission since she arrived in the state. According to the REC, the objective and balanced reporting by the media encouraged peace in the state, stressing that there was no misinformation throughout the general elections.
“When I arrived at the state in 2021, I identified with the media, provided all the working tools, and released credible information which created no room for rumours. In Nigeria, when an official does the right thing, people won’t acknowledge or praise you; but once one does the wrong thing, there are criticisms all over the place. Now elections are around the corner, there is no small election. Any election is taken very seriously. We have the governorship election fixed for November 8, and INEC has started working towards it. We also have two bye-elections in the state.”
“We are ready, hoping that political parties and politicians are preparing also,” she said.
She pointed out that the three elections could not be held on the same day. She charged political parties and their candidates to observe and keep to the rules, urging them to start mobilising, sensitising and organising their primaries, adding that the Federal Government would play their part by providing funds.
Agwu said: “INEC has no special candidate. All the candidates contesting from different political parties are Nigerians and belong to various political parties. We give all privileges and rights including a level playing ground to all.
