Police stations in the northern parts of Tshwane have shown increases in contact crimes in the third quarter crime stats for the 2024/25 financial year released by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on February 21.
The statistics indicate the number of crimes reported to the country’s 1 163 police stations from October to December.
Contact crimes, which include offences like murder, sexual assault, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, saw notable shifts in the far north of the metro.
Temba Police Station in the far north featured among the 30 worst for crime nationally and provincially, stood at position 14.
Ga-Rankuwa
Contact crimes (crimes against people) saw an increase of 9% this quarter, compared to the previous quarter.
Murder counts increased by three, with 11 cases being reported and sexual offences increased by seven counts as 31 cases were reported.
A total of 99 cases of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) was reported and common assault cases decreased by 15.9% (from 137 to 160).
Common robberies decreased by one count to 21 cases this quarter and robberies with aggravating circumstances increased by 16.4% (73 to 85).
22 rape cases and seven cases of other sexual offences were reported.
Carjacking cases remained the same as the previous quarter with 14 cases being reported and 25 robberies at residential premises took place, while 11 robberies at non-residential premises were recorded.
Malicious damage to property cases increased by two counts (51 up to 53).
12 burglary cases at non-residential premises were recorded and there was a decrease of two counts of burglaries at residential premises at 52 cases.
Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases increased by four counts.
Police detected four counts of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, compared to the two in the last quarter.
Soshanguve
The Soshanguve SAPS reported an increase of 9.8% in contact crimes, with attempted murder cases decreasing by one count to 15.
Assault with intent to cause GBH increased by 26.3% (99 cases up to 125) and cases of common assault increased by 14.8% (196 to 225).
Common robberies increased by 17 counts (now 53) and murder cases increased by one count (now five), while sexual offences decreased by eight (now 20).
Two fewer rape cases (now 20) were reported this quarter.
Carjackings increased by 15 counts, up to 42 reported cases and robberies at residential premises increased by one count to 12 reported cases.
Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased by one count for a total of 14 cases reported.
Detected drug-related crimes increased by 31.9% (69 to 91).
Mabopane
Mabopane Police Station reported a decrease of 11.4 % in contact crimes.
Robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 23.3% (159 to 122 cases) and common assault cases increased by 2.5% (158 to 162).
Assault with intent to cause GBH cases rose by 9.2% (109 to 99) and rape cases decreased by 10 counts to 13.
Six fewer counts of sexual assault were recorded in this quarter, bringing the total to four.
Carjackings decreased by eight counts to 27 cases and robberies at non-residential premises decreased by 15 counts to nine.
Temba
Contact crimes (crimes against people) saw a decrease of 0.7% this quarter.
Murder counts increased by eight, with 17 cases being reported and sexual offences increased by two counts as 61 cases were reported.
47 cases of rape were reported and 61 cases of sexual offences were reported.
Carjackings increased by eight counts from 10 to 18, and 31 robberies at residential premises took place, while 13 robberies at non-residential premises were recorded.
Malicious damage to property cases increased by 16 counts from 110 to 126.
72 cases of burglary at non-residential premises were recorded and there was an increase of 34 counts at residential premises with 183 cases.
Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by 12 counts.
A total of 201 cases of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) were reported and common assault cases increased by 11.7% (from 375 to 419).
Common robberies decreased by 20.4%, as 74 cases were reported this quarter while robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 7.7% (181 cases down to 167).
