Benue APC yet to conduct ward, LG congresses – Spokesman

The All Progressive Congress (APC) Caretaker Committee in Benue said the party was yet to conduct ward and local government congresses in the state.

The State Organising Secretary/Publicity Secretary of the Party, Mr James Ornguga, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Makurdi.

Ornguga told NAN that there were reports that the caretaker committee was secretly conducting the congresses.

The spokesperson said that allegations were baseless, saying that the committee was yet to receive election guidelines from the national secretariat for the conduct of the congresses.

He stated that the national secretariat usually sends a panel for the conduct of the elections; INEC sends representative(s) to monitor while security agencies deploy their personnel to provide security.

According to him, the tenure of the current ward and LG party officials would expire in June.

He said those alleging that the committee conducted congresses do not know anything about the administrative running of political parties.

“It is clear that those peddling such rumours lack basic knowledge on the workings and running of a political party.

“Congresses are done openly. They can’t be hidden. We have not received guidelines for the conduct of the congresses from the national secretariat.

“What we did last week was just stakeholders’ meetings. Remember that we had two mandates as a committee: to conduct primaries for the 2024 LG election and unite our party.

“We have done the first assignment 100 per cent correctly. Though we are able to achieve minimal progress on the level of unifying the party, some of our leaders have refused to even meet despite our several requests.

“However, our party is stronger and more united than what we met as a committee, “he said.
