Rainy New Year’s week in store for Pretoria residents

As Pretoria residents prepare to welcome the new year, they should brace themselves for a series of rainy days this week.

According to the South African Weather Services (SAWS), the forecast indicates a string of rainy afternoons, with a notable uptick in precipitation as we transition into 2025.

SAWS forecaster Banetia Phakula said a 30% chance of rain is expected this afternoon.

She said on Tuesday, December 31, the likelihood of rain is set to rise significantly to 60%, particularly in the afternoon and extending into the evening.

“By the time residents cross over into the new year, rain is likely to be present,” added Phakula.

She said rain will persist through the start of January, with the same 60% chance of precipitation expected on January 1 as the day progresses.

“The forecast also suggests that January 2 and 3 will also bring rain, maintaining this 60% probability, which may lead to potential flooding in vulnerable areas.”

Phakula said there are no immediate indications of severe thunderstorms in Pretoria at the moment.

“The rain might lead to flooding, especially in informal settlements and areas where drainage might be a problem,” she cautioned.

While a severe weather alert is not currently in place, precautionary measures may be issued if conditions worsen.

In terms of temperature, residents can anticipate mild to warm conditions throughout the week, with the highs ranging from the mid-20s to 30°C.

Peak forecasts for the week are as follows:
– Monday, December 30: 30°C
– Tuesday, December 31: 28°C
– Wednesday, January 1: 29°C
– Thursday, January 2: 30°C
– Friday, January 3: 30°C.
