Tshwane police warn of bogus Moot detective

Tshwane District police have warned the public about a recent scam involving a man pretending to be a Moot detective.

According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, the man falsely claims the victim’s phone was used in fraudulent activity.

He said the man then pressures the victim into paying R10 000 to a “standby prosecutor” to avoid arrest.

Van Dyk has urged the public to verify any claim of a case by asking for a case number and then contacting their local police station directly.

“We also want to remind citizens that paying bribes to make cases disappear is illegal,” said Van Dyk.

Residents are advised to be wary of any call from anyone who claims to be law enforcement.

Van Dyk said scammers have become increasingly sophisticated in imitating police procedures, even pretending to be detectives or prosecutors.

“Victims are often manipulated into thinking they are under investigation, to extort money.”

To avoid falling prey to these scams, the SAPS recommends the following:

– Always ask for a case number and confirm that the police station is handling the case.

– Dial the official SAPS available on the web or app to verify the claim.

– It is illegal to pay or offer a bribe to make a criminal case disappear. If asked to do so, report it to the police immediately.

Van Dyk emphasised the police’s ongoing commitment to public safety, particularly as criminals become more creative with their schemes.

Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and avoid sharing personal information or making a payment without verifying the authenticity of the caller.
