The Pretoria North Town Hall is up for improvement soon, according to the Tshwane metro.
This is after the public had concerns over the safety and upkeep of the building as well as vagrants loading the facility.
Tshwane reacting to the concerns installed a new gate to address the long-standing issue of individuals drinking and sleeping at the hall.
Tshwane said delays in finding new solutions were due to financial constraints on the metro’s part.
According to metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, the installation of the new gate is part of a broader maintenance and safety initiative overseen by the Regional Community Services Section.
Mashigo said ongoing safety and upkeep will be handled by the Parks and Horticulture Services, which include regular cleaning by Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers and security personnel stationed at the facility.
The installation of the new gate represents a pivotal move by the metro to address security concerns at the town hall.
“While it had always been part of regional facilities maintenance plans, implementation was delayed due to financial challenges.
With the gate finally installed in the 2024/25 financial year, it signals the metro’s commitment to improve the hall’s security, which was a major concern for residents.”
Mashigo emphasised that safety and maintenance will be continuous.
He said the Parks and Horticulture Services team will conduct monthly maintenance, including cleaning and general upkeep of the hall and surrounding areas.
“Security personnel will remain stationed at the hall to prevent further issues, such as loitering or unauthorised use of the space.”
The metro has also indicated that the renovation and repurposing of the Pretoria North Town Hall is a priority.
Residents of Pretoria North can expect continued progress of the hall’s refurbishment in the coming months, which will further enhance the utility and safety of the historical site.
Ward 2 councillor Quentin Meyer said the installation of the gate security measures aims to ensure that the hall remains a safe and clean environment for local events and gatherings.
“This development is a major step toward our ward, whose residents have long sought action regarding the condition of the town hall.”
