As the festive season approaches, non-profit organisations (NPOs) in Pretoria North are reflecting on the challenges faced throughout the year and preparing for increased demand for assistance over the holidays.
These organisations, which work tirelessly to support vulnerable groups such as the homeless, orphans, and low-income families, are appealing to the public for donations and volunteers.
With limited resources and growing need, NPOs like community shelters, food banks, and child welfare organisations are calling on residents to contribute in any way they can.
Whether it’s through food parcels, clothing donations, or volunteering time, every contribution can make a significant difference.
Cilla Trexler of the Wollies Animal Project said the festive season is a wonderful time for many, but it can be particularly challenging for animal shelters.
“We kindly ask the public to refrain from using fireworks. Many animals get injured or run away due to the noise, as they are much more sensitive to sounds than we are.
“We are dedicated to assisting animals in distress during this period. If you come across an abandoned animal, please send us a WhatsApp message with the details, a photo, and the location so we can try to locate the owner.
“If we can’t find them, you can bring the animal to us or take it to the SPCA. If the animal requires medical attention, we will do our best to help or you can take it to a vet close to you or to the SPCA,” said Trexler.
Trexler said if you’re leaving your pets behind as you go on holiday, please arrange for a trustworthy person to care for them.
“Feel free to call us, and we might be able to recommend someone. Please avoid locking up or chaining your pets.
“If you have some spare time, we would love your help at any shelter, as we truly need all the support we can get.”
House Hermon manager Lize Strauss said they still have a great need for different things, of which one is to trim the trees in and around the property to keep it neat and tidy, but also to prevent easy access for criminals who may climb a tree over the fence.
“Items always in high demand are sanitary ware like adult nappies and toiletries. In the month leading up to Christmas we will be decorating the centre to liven up the spirits of our residents.
“We plan a Family Christmas Lunch to accommodate any family member who might go away on leave, to still be able to spend a nice day with their loved one.
“We currently have 100 residents of different ages. Healthy snacks like fruit, fruit juice, and nuts are welcome, but we have plenty of sweet tooths here as well and they’ll be ecstatic for a piece of chocolate.”
Life Changing Project’s Tebogo Mpufane thanked the Pretoria North, Akasia community, for its continued support throughout a difficult 2024.
“We ask the community for any dignified food, clothing, shoes, and unwanted furniture.
“As the festive season, we experience donor fatigue, and as most NPOs will be closed, our resources will be stretched to feeding outreaches in and around Pretoria North areas.
“On behalf of the Life Changing Project’s management, we wish everyone a happy festive season,” said Mpufane.
