Mean Girls has taken the world by storm since its initial release twenty years ago in 2004. The hit teen comedy was written by SNL writer and cast member Tina Fey and starred Lindsay Lohan. At the time, Lindsay was dominating teen films, with roles in Freaky Friday and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.
The film has spawned countless memes and several of its lines have been referenced multiple times in pop culture. The film has even inspired new generations and a new musical version of the story has hit the big screen.
Therefore, when Lindsay and co-star Lacey Chabert made an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, fans of the film were thrilled to see them back together again. Both actresses were promoting new Christmas movies and their reunion was the perfect way to kick off the festive holiday season.
Lindsay And Lacey Reprised Their Mean Girls Roles On Watch What Happens Live
Lindsay Lohan and Lacey Chabert recently appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen to promote their respective new films. Lindsay is promoting Our Little Secret and Lacey is promoting Hot Frosty, both of which are Christmas movies. During their appearance, they partnered with the host to reenact the famous cafeteria scene from Mean Girls as part of Andy’s “Clubhouse Playhouse” segment.
Lindsay reprised her role as Cady and Lacey as Gretchen. Andy, meanwhile, helped out by wearing Kim Zolciak-Bierman’s old wig to inhabit the role of Regina George, who was originally played by Rachel McAdams.
In addition to the fun, Andy told Lindsay that her dad, Michael Lohan, once ended up in a viral scene from Real Housewives Of Atlanta, because he was at the restaurant where some of the cast members got into an argument. “Wait, really?” a surprised Lindsay asked. “My dad was there?” Lindsay seemed to get a kick out of the fact that her father unintentionally made an appearance on reality television.
During the show, a viewer called in and asked Lindsay if she would ever reprise her role in The Parent Trap. The viewer suggested she play the mom to the twins she portrayed in the original movie. “I mean if [director] Nancy Meyers was a part of that, yeah,” Lindsay responded. “Yeah. I would never say no to Nancy.” Andy told Lindsay that he thought the movie was “perfect” and she agreed.
While it was great to see Lindsay and Lacey together again, it wasn’t the first time since Mean Girls that the two actresses reunited. Lindsay, Lacey, Amanda Seyfried, and many other cast members reunited for several Walmart holiday commercials in 2023. The commercials gave fans of the original movie a glimpse at the characters’ lives today. Cady is now the high school guidance counselor, Karen is a weather reporter, Gretchen is a mother, Kevin is a father, and Damian even makes an appearance.
The commercials also made reference to several iconic quotes from the movie. The cast spoke to People after they were released. The cast told the outlet how happy they were to be playing these roles once again.
“It was so nice being back together after all these years. It was great catching up with everyone,”
Lindsay said

“What better time to get together than right before the holidays,” Daniel Franzese said. “I know we are excited for everyone to see what we’ve all been up to. Walmart made it so special by allowing us to have fun together while getting to do a new project that spreads excitement. There’s something here for everyone (except for Gretchen Wieners).”
The only character whose absence was felt was Regina George. Rachel McAdams was absent from the commercials and fans no doubt took notice. The actress would explain her absence to Variety.
“I don’t know; I guess I wasn’t that excited about doing a commercial if I’m being totally honest,”
she said
. “A movie sounded awesome, but I’ve never done commercials, and it just didn’t feel like my bag.”

Lindsay And Lacey Reflected On Their Fashion Moments In The 2000s
Lindsay and Lacey also used their reunion as an opportunity to reflect on some of their past fashion moments in a game of “So Fetch or That’s Retch?” During the game, the actresses were shown photos of their outfits from early 2000s red carpet appearances and were instructed to decide if they were “so fetch” or, as host Andy said in reference to Mean Girls, “the ugliest effing thing you’ve ever seen.”
Andy first showed a photo of Lindsay at the Freaky Friday premiere in 2003. “That’s fetch,” Lindsay said while looking at a photo of herself in a black and metallic cocktail dress. Lacey agreed, calling the outfit “adorable.” Lindsay was then asked to comment on a photo of herself in a turquoise dress at the Mean Girls premiere in 2004. “I loved this,” Lindsay said at first, but added, “I think the spray tan wasn’t necessary. I was a little orange.”
Lacey was then shown a photo from 2001 where she sported a fitted floral-patterned shirt with three-quarter sleeves on the red carpet. Lacey paired this look with dark wash low-rise jeans. “Wow. Thank you so much for bringing up that picture,” Lacey joked. “I’m gonna go with retch, but it was well-intended.” Andy then said, “In its time, it was perfect.”
It’s a well-known fact that Lindsay originally wanted to play the role of Regina when she first heard about the film. At the time, director Mark Waters and writer Tina Fey both liked the idea of Lindsay playing the popular leader of the Plastics.
However, according to Vanity Fair, there were others involved who wanted Lindsay to maintain a likable image and worried she would ruin the brand she built for herself with roles in Freaky Friday and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. They also felt that since Lindsay was a “newly bankable” star, she should be in the “central, relatable role.” There were also those who just didn’t believe Lindsay’s audience would accept her as the bad girl.
“Lindsay brings this gigantic advantage in casting in that you automatically like her,”
producer Lorne Michaels said
. Tina then decided that it would be a good idea for Lindsay to play the role of a good girl “who gets to turn into Regina.”
Lindsay would later explain that her desire to play Regina came from wanting to play a different kind of character.
“I had just played—in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and Freaky Friday—not the cool girl in school,” she said. “I was still seventeen years old and I wanted to be the cool girl on set.”

Lindsay is no stranger to Christmas movies. She previously starred in the film Falling For Christmas, which is referenced in Lacey’s latest film, Hot Frosty. In the film, a snowman magically turns into a very attractive human man. During one scene, Jack Snowman, played by Dustin Milligan, is watching the Netflix Christmas movie on television.
Lacey’s character, Kathy Barrett, then makes a comment that the actress looks just like someone she went to high school with, referencing their characters in Mean Girls.
“I don’t know whose idea it was, but when I heard of the idea of referencing Lindsay… I loved it,”
Lacey told
Us Weekly. “It’s perfect and I’m so happy. This is all full circle.”
Lacey said that it’s “so nice” to be promoting a new Netflix holiday movie at the same time as Lindsay. “We’ve known each other since we were little kids. We’re both moms now,” Lacey said. “I’m so happy we’re still on the journey together.”
The two actresses recently reunited and shared some loving words with each other on social media. “So fetch catching up with my girl @thereallacey,” Lindsay wrote on her Instagram story alongside a photo of the two together.
Lacey is no stranger to Christmas movies either. Since Mean Girls, she has made a name for herself starring in Hallmark holiday movies. She revealed that she was drawn to her latest film for a similar reason.
“There has to be something in every movie I do that I relate [to] and that hits my heart. It’s like, ‘What is the real arc for the character?’ And for this character Kathy, she’s trying to overcome her grief [after losing her husband], which is something that’s so relatable and unfortunately a situation that so many people find themselves in,” Lacey, who recently lost her sister Wendy, said. “I relate to it personally, and I think there’s so many beautiful messages in this [film] and the way that it was written that I hope will bring some hope to people and inspire people during the holiday season.”
